Title: Editing 5DIII mov files
Post by: walter.sk on November 23, 2012, 11:44:47 am
I know nothing about editing video files, and have tried a couple of videos with my 5DMkIII.  I am using Photoshop CS6 (not the extended version) and LR4.1, and have been able to bring the .mov files into the Library module to view them in LR4, and into CS6.  However, I can't seem to save the edited files as .mov or any other video file from CS6.  The can only be saved, apparently, as Tiff files.

I am not going to get into video, but would simply like to shorten clips and possibly remove portions of clips, and maybe add a cross fade between 2 clips.  Can PS CS6 do this?  What about Premier Elements?  I don't want to buy more software if I don't have to.

If you're on Mac, I highly recommend ScreenFlow ($99) if you have to purchase something.

I have no idea about PS CS6 or Elements but Quicktime Player should be able to do that. In the Edit menu, there's a "Split Clip" and a "Trim" command.

You can do it in CS6 Extended but I'm not sure about the regular version.

There are a couple of free video editing packages that will do the basic things you're looking for.  AVIDemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/) is one and it's available for PC and Mac platforms.  Another is Virtualdub.  If I recall it's a PC only application.

I believe AVIDemux will open .mov files natively.  I'm not sure Virtualdub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) will but there are filters and plugins available that will enhance functionality.

Many thanks for the responses.  I'm on a Windows PC, so I will look into Quicktime Player as well as Virtualdub and AVIDemux.

Windows Movie Maker (free for Win 7) will probably do all you need. Very simple and user friendly, but surprisingly capable.
Beyond that Lightworks is a very powerful freeware editor, but will need some learning to get the best from.

After playing with AvidDemux, Windows Movie Maker and Quicktime, I went back into Photoshop CS6 (not Extended) and found the editing features that the other programs have, and the splitting of edited parts into layers.  I think I'm beginning to understand how CS6 works with video, and even though it won't directly "save" as a .mov file, I think I can export the worked-on project and save it.  At any rate, I know now how to do this in Movie Maker, and I can at least edit out the parts of a .mov file I don't want.

Thanks for all the responses.
