Title: Sony announces new 30" 4K monitor (4096 x 2160)
Post by: Graham Mitchell on November 01, 2012, 07:00:08 pm
I don't know all the specs on this particular monitor (the PVM-X300) - I'm more interested in the possibility of more 30" monitors coming out in 4K. That would be a beautiful way to see digital photos!

EDIT: Just heard about the ViewSonic VP3280-LED 31.5-inch 4K Monitor, but the price on that baby is expected to be between $30K and $40K. Ouch. Guess we'll have to wait a few years before the prices hit consumer level.

Apparently there are various formats falling under the 4K umbrella. Some are 4:3 ratio, which would be ideal for the photographer at around 4000x3000 pixels (12 MP!)

I would personally expect Apple to release a 27 or 30 inch near 4K monitor together with the next gen Mac pro in first half 2013, but I could be wrong of course.

Cheers,
Bernard

Bernard,

who would be making the Apple monitor - and would you actually buy an Apple monitor ? for color critical work!!

Hi,

Apple has "Retina" displays with double resolution I guess the technology can be expanded to larger sizes.

I guess that Apple displays can be used for color critical work if properly calibrated, but much of the work may not be color critical anyway. Also I guess that Bernard is suggesting the screen to be used for displaying work.

Best regards
Erik

Thanks Eric,

i was being a little cheeky - as Apple do not make any Displays themselves, its all outsourced. Further they may have bought the rights to be the sole user of a given technology for a fixed period of time.

Apple have copyrighted the term Retina Display, though I think one of their supplies will not be supplying them for much longer - that be Samsung, the other supplier is LG which is still supplying

Hi Henrik,

I'm vaguely aware of a legal conflict between Samsung and Apple and I'm also aware of Samsung being the major supplier of Apple.

To me it seems that Apple sort of has all the stuff needed to make that kind of display and they are quite offensive in both releasing technology and pricing.

On the other hand, I have a 6K camera, some, give me a 6K projector, please!

Best regards
Erik

Apple certainly have the $$$$$ to do anything these days, regarding Samsung, I read the other day, but can't find the reference to it now, that Apple stopped their relationship with Samsung, or that Samsung were to stop supplying Apple in the near future.

Either way, we will soon see if they are or not ;-)

6K display, i think IBM did one some years ago

Henrik

PS: its certainly interesting times

Samsung gets about 3.2% of its revenue from Apple and this represents about 0.25% of Apple's Cost of Goods.

I would vote for Sharp.

I agree that their glossy screens are unbearable (my Mac Book pro is a nightmare to use), but the recent retina screens seem a lot better already. And... who knows, they may have understood the needs of pros?

Bernard
