Title: Locating what catalogue files are in
Post by: ndevlin on October 21, 2012, 08:14:07 pm
I have a series of master files which I have processed but I cannot locate them in any catalog.  The masters are intact where they should be, but I cannot for the life of me find what catalogue they are in (along with the processing I rather would not have to redo).

Any way to search for this?

Thanks in advance.

How many catalogs are ya talking about? Many ala Mike of just a few? Are these raw files or rendered files? About the only way I can think of is to copy the file's name including file extension and then do a metadata search in each catalog for the file name and see which one has it–hopefully that will be the catalog that has the others. If you have saved the .xmp metadata to the file, you could simply import without loosing your settings.

Too many catalogues. Fewer after a few hours work tonight. No luck finding the processing instructions. Thank god the raw file was there.

How many catalogues do you keep Jeff?

On my main machine (the real catalog), one...with almost 300K...on the laptop? About 100K but designed and dedicated to demos and workshops...I have a 3rd workstation that has a testing catalog that is simply a test catalog which I could toss easily.

Everything I shoot ends up in my main catalog...I do shoot "project catalogs" for a specific shoot but always import that catalog into my main catalog so I've got everything "somewhere"...

Maybe the files are registered in one catalogue, but you can't tell which, or maybe they are in more than one catalogue and have different adjustments and metadata in each, or maybe they aren't recorded at all? One or all of these problems is often the result of fragmenting control of your pictures.

I'm the same as Jeff - one main catalogue, with others only having finite lifespans or being demo-only.
