Title: Photoshop manages color vs printer manages color
Post by: ad2 on October 08, 2012, 05:59:39 pm
Hello,

I have been printing from CS6 on several Macs to ColorBurst X-Photo RIPs over a network. From research online and skimming forums over the last couple of years, I keep seeing different answers about whether to select Photoshop Manages Color or Printer Manages Color from the the print dialog box. I am using Adobe RGB 1998 as the working space in CS6 and ColorBurst is using the same with custom paper profiles. Does anyone have any suggestions about which is the proper choice when printing to network RIPs?

Thanks.

what i didn't see in your post is: are you using the printer's custom profile and set up a custom proof when you are editing your images? if you do. then Photoshop Manages Color is your answer.
after all, the print company has those custom paper profiles to help you get the most out of your editing skills.

It will be best to use printer 'manages color' and pick an appropriate profile from those supplied with the RIP (or custom ones built by the supplied profiling software).

after all, the print company has those custom paper profiles to help you get the most out of your editing skills.
Not in this case . The ColorBurst X Photo RIP uses CMYK profiles.

Thanks. Here's how I have the color management options set in the printer dialog box:

Document Profile:Adobe RGB (1998)
Color Handling: Photoshop Manages Color
Printer Profile: Adobe RGB (1998)  [**Is it incorrect to choose this? I just noticed on Windows that you can only select printer profiles and Adobe RGB 1998 and sRGB don't show up in the list**]

The custom paper profile is only installed on the Mac dedicated to ColorBurst.

I've only installed the custom CMYK profiles on the ColorBurst macs. If I installed them on the mac running Photoshop and selected it from the Printer Profile list, would that cause the profile to be applied twice, once from Photoshop and once from ColorBurst?

Thanks.

Quite probably.
You could always try reading the documentation for the RIP for the answer or calling tech support. RIPs aren't cheap, you've paid for that support.
