Title: CF to SD adapter on Phase One P45+
Post by: julienlanoo on September 23, 2012, 10:18:10 am
Hi guys,
searching around i found some CF to SD adapters..
I wonder when i put this in to my Phase One P45+, wil it work ?
if yous could be cool, as SD's are smaller and do not need a card reader to put into a MBA ..

any thoughts;.?

greets
ju

Been wondering about something like that. Haven't tried it myself but that SD slot in my Retina MBP is very convenient.
Might just buy a cheap adaptor and see.

well the idea is not to use a cheap converter in my Phase one..
But only to have less risk of bending the connectors of the CF on shoots,

Also i read SD's are much more stable,
Also smaller, no connectors to break, and at half the price..

so i wonder..

For what it's worth I've only seen one customer bend the pins of their Phase One back.

That customer did so in his first weekend of working with the back so I attribute it largely to unfamiliarity. In his case when we examined the CF card he was using it had one of it's holes jammed with debris (looked like a very small pebble/rock) and he didn't have the experience to know that it should just slide right in - when it gave him a lot of resistance he just pushed harder. Understandable really - my guess is someone with more experience would have felt it was a very unusual amount of resistance.

It definitively would be more easy to transfer the files to the integrated SD reader on the MB. As for the pin bending fear. I all the adapters I've seen have the slot for the SD on the side. So you would still need to plug and unplug your CF to take the SD in and out no?
Unless you are thinking to use the Wi-Fi SD card.
Has anyone used that? It would be so sexy to shoot tethered without the cable :)
Just saying

THAT IS SUPER GREAT IDEA !!! a CF-SD adapter card with the Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card sending the pics with no messy firewire cables...
Anyone tried ?

Please CF makers, make a CF cards with wifi built in !!!

And after that, please MFDB makers please make digital backs with wifi built in!

1) signal strength is a huge issue as Eye-Fi was developed for small plastic cameras not thick digital backs with a large metal chassis.
2) transfer time is really, really slow - it's designed to send small JPGs not 40/60/80mp raw files.

It is actually more advanced than that.

Eye-fi with the right cameras including pro metal bodies can store big raw and send just smaller jpgs over the wi-fi.
Actually very useful.

Wireless USB might be a way to go if Phase and Leaf could actually make USB work.

We ae talking about the MFDB. Anyone has a back that shoots raw and jpeg?
Maybe 1080 video too? LoL

Well, not the point of bending, but the point of using mba s build in card reader would be nice ....

The 645D shoots raw (DNG if desired) and jpeg.  No 1080 video, but why would you shoot 1080 with a MFDB? It also uses SD cards, something that was criticized when the camera was introduced.

I was joking, but wow. I never researched other formats that much to know this. It's like a dream camera for all the digi-35mm users.

Sinar made a back that also would shoot raw and jpeg call the eSprit.

Fred,
Have you ever used Phase's Capture Pilot? or Leaf's Capture Remote?    A lot of leaf backs have bluetooth to send previews to ipaq's, ipad's and iPhones...   Hasselblad has something too - forget the name.   See it was there all the time!    Can you do that with your Nikon or Fuji?

The grand-daddy of portable MFDBs - the Kodak Proback 645 series - shoots RAW, RAW + TIFF, or RAW + JPEG...although it's more accurate to say that it processes the RAWs to JPEG or TIFF in between shots rather than at the instant of exposure. It also has such goodies as a built-in intervalometer, and a click-off IR-block filter for handheld IR photography. That DB was released in 2002!

I was there. Definitely user error in that case (not me btw!). Basically, if it doesn't fit easily don't shove it! That said, the CF card standard could be better and absolutely protect against such user issues.

the issue I've had with CF->SD card adaptors is they are very slow. I tried one with my IQ180 and after a couple of shots it's 5 to 15 seconds before you can shoot again.  Also tried one with a 5D Mark 2, and once the buffer is full ... the word molasses comes to mind.  That was with a pretty fast SD card.  Not sure why it's like this, and I've also never understood why EyeFi doesn't make a CF card version.  Shouldn't be hard, plenty of pro style cameras out there that use CF cards.
