Title: Rothstein
Post by: amolitor on August 15, 2012, 11:52:38 am
This is NOT my image. However, it's in the FSA file, so it has no copyright as far as the LoC can determine, and it belongs more or less to me as an citizen of the USA, so I am comfortable with the legalities of posting it here.

I occasionally troll the FSA file for good photographs, and post them on my blog. I ran across this one, having decided to see what Rothstein had shot.

Just *LOOK* at this thing! It's gorgeous.

What are those funny fence-like markings at the top and bottom of the picture?

;-)

They're a fence to keep your damned cars out of the frame ;)

It's some new process, Rob. They aren't using glass plates any more. The new stuff is flexible and comes in long strips with the emulsion already coated on it.
I think those holes at the top and bottom are probably intended to reduce weight in the parts that are outside the image area. Can't imagine any other use for them.
 ;)

HCB made use of them a lot.
