Title: Backing up your CR2 files using CrashPlan - No RAW Support?
Post by: SteveZ on August 14, 2012, 05:35:04 pm
I recently started using CrashPlan, an online file storage service only to discover that my RAW files are restored as XMP files. Crashplan's tech support has told me that "Your TIFF and RAW files will be backed up and restored intact, in the original formats." I have to admit I'm stumped.

Has anyone else had this problem with online storage services?

This doesn't make sense. Raw!=XMP they are completely different things. I can't tell if you mean the Raw file is restored intact but with a .xmp extension? Or if the Raw file's XMP file is restored instead of the Raw file? Or other?

I'm using Crashplan with raw files for KM and Sony, and no problem.

Perhaps review your general settings and inclusions/exclusion criteria?

Doesn’t make sense and I suspect user error. As a CrashPlan user, I’ve seen no such issues.

The Raw file's XMP file is restored instead of the Raw file.

When you browse the Crashplan files, can you see the raw files?  What happens if you copy, rather than restore, those files back to your machine?

What happens if you take a text file and rename it to .cr2 and test it?

Are you backing up DNG files or RAW?

You are right, the RAWs aren't being backed up. I'm thinking...do they need to be converted to DNG format?

Crashplan is backing-up my CR2 and DNG files. There are no sidecar files with either, so I can't tell what happens with both.  Also, this is a local backup, not an offsite backup.

They don't need to be converted to DNG, but you may need to check (or check with Crashplan) if there's some exotic setting that's stopping the CR2 files form being backed up in the first instance - by default, there should be no problem.

CrashPlan definitely does backup my CR2 files and restores them without any problem.
I would try to see if you didn't exclude CR2 files from backing up.

Well, definitely no problem backing up and restoring DNG files, but still no success with RAW. I supposed I could live with that except it's a pain converting RAW to DNG every time. I checked CrashPlan's exclusion files as well as my settings and it should be backing up RAW as per Farmer and Francois. The next step is to call tech support and get to the bottom of this.

While it might not help you, who knows, I experienced some issues when I tried to backup files or folders (not CR2) that had a color label (set in the Finder). At some point, the issue vanished and "colored" files were backed up properly.

I think so. There's nothing about the content or size of a Raw file that's substantially different from DNG.

I know nothing about CrashPlan so this is just speculation but a thought occurred to me reading this thread ... do you by chance have it set to only backup files modified since the last backup?  In most workflows editing does not modify the raw file itself, the changes being stored in the XMP sidecar file.  If the raw file's archive attribute is cleared or its modification date is prior to the last backup date, it could be bypassed by a backup run even though its associated XMP shows it needs backing up.

has your backup completed to first run?
I've checked my CP and there are lots of folders with 'only' xmp files in them but only because the first complete backup has not finished yet. In other folders the raw files are there. It almost seems as if CP would backup the smallest files first.
