Title: Lantern
Post by: Andres Bonilla on July 30, 2012, 01:59:22 pm
When I took this photo I had in mind this post editing on the file. I continue trying different things that some people like others don't or just hate. I would like your opinion on the photo.

Thanks,

Andres

If the objective was the antique look, you succeeded. It looks like a photo pulled from a trunk that is over 100 years old. The area in the lower-left, that is brighter, however, is a bit distracting. Especially the bolt head that has a strong specular highlight/reflection on it.

I like it.

So do I. It's more like a painting than a photograph, but that's what you were after. It's very decorative. I don't agree that the bolt head is distracting. The lantern itself is too bright for that.

Upon further inspection it is a rivet, not a bolt, that I should have referred to.

I like it a lot - rivet head and all.

Thank you sir! Some photos look great with the treatment, some others that I thought would look great did not.

Thanks! I did not change the original lighting on the lantern too much, I worked mostly on the back that was very bright.

A beautiful image - well done!

I have experimented a bit with toning down the lower part of the image, below the lamp, especially the reds and I think that improves it a lot.

Wonderful image, evocative of an earlier time.

I like it.  But not because it looks like an old photograph.  Old photographs didn't look this way.  Not even close.

I like the simplicity and the choice of subject.  Both are immediately attractive.

I do think the light and the supporting pipes compete for the eye.  They shouldn't.  I'd tone down the pipes and let the lantern shine on it's own.

It would elevate this image if it could somehow go from being the picture.. to being part of a bigger picture, but where it would fit and still draw the eye.

I'd guess your instincts led you to make this picture as is?  I'd say your instincts were right on.  Good work.

Ok here is the original file, as I was walking on the bridge. This way you could see the original vs my idea.

Thanks for viewing,

Andres.
