Title: Well, I've put up my own website
Post by: michswiss on July 29, 2012, 11:50:07 pm
It remains a work in progress and I fully intend to continue to work on the text and presentation, but I finally have a site under my own name:

I like it.  It's clean and elegant and mostly fast enough (once the galleries load it's very good and that doesn't seem to take long).

Nice work :-)

Thanks Phil,

I put this together using WordPress with some freely available templates and plugins.  My technical skill are still good enough to get through some of the CSS, XML and all that stuff without too much effort.   I'm not absolutely thrilled with the gallery formatting yet, I'd like to look into getting a lightbox display going in the future.  But not now.   The reason it's slightly slow on load is that it pre-loads all the images.  Once loaded though, image to image transitions are pretty quick.

I am amazed by the flexibility of WordPress to be repurposed from a blog to your gallery. Nicely done.

Congrats, Jennifer. It's a great start, and it's full of some very good work.

Thanks for having a look.  It's nice to think it's possible to create a photo site without flash or obtuse navigation.  At least those were two of the requirements I gave myself when I started.  I'm going to be letting it rest for a month or two while I get the metadata around the images sorted. Then it's on to figuring out how to rotate new galleries in and out and adding a separate area profiling commissioned stuff.
