Title: Edius goes Red and more
Post by: fredjeang on July 14, 2012, 09:52:42 am
I know that it will interest 2% of the people here because it's not FCP or Adobe nor FCP or Adobe either. But...

Edius 6.5 now supports native RED files! HURRA ! (before, the Red workflow was a heavy dpx one.)
Can export 10bits alpha chanel to compositing software
and supports mixed formats editing (aspect-ratio, framerates, sd-hd...without rendering anything)
now supports stereo editing
can export AVCHD
Supports AVCHD 2
has now a stabilizer
can export to flash format
has a minimum reso as low as 24x24pixels and max of 4K
Its 10 bits codec is now available for Mac through QT
and can import some still camera raw formats directly (camera raw support)
Supports Canon's XF
Subtitles
and of course all the other formats the previous versions supported (probably the editor with the widest formats support).

Nota: for the people who shoot the GH2 in HBR mode (25p), you know that in this mode the NLEs tend to recognized the footage as interlaced and not progressive as it is because of the wrapper. This is really anoying in Avid. In Edius you solved this in one clic without having to re-wrap anything. It works brilliantly, easy and fast.

The workflow with Da-Vinci Resolve should be an AAF, but if you get used to the color correct capabilities of Edius and the masks etc...you won't open resolve very much anyway.

Beleive me guys, you should take a serious look at this editor (and sell your Macs  :P). It makes life so much easier.

Very simple: find a reasonably fast PC, install the trial version and work a week or 2 with it seriously. Then come back in this thread and write about it. I doubt very much you'll open a FCP anymore, and maybe even a PP. You want to bet?

More stuff...

How to import Raw files from still cams into the editor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFn-rFvNGxc&feature=relmfu

The Loudness meter (obligatory now in Japan): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka8WpE2yJO0&feature=related

Nested sequences with alpha, overview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPA0Ryww7nc&feature=relmfu

Export to QT wrap in HQ/HQX with alpha chanel acailable for Mac users: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQX_XV2KsZk&feature=relmfu
(HQ and HQX are on the best intermediate codecs)

I've read in specialized press that Grass Valley is gaining some significant markets and that more and more people are getting aware of how good the system is. If it was a cross-platform software it would be a serious choice to consider for Mac-only users.

Thanks for sharing, Fred!

I believe Adobe Premiere supported native redcode since CS4, or am I mistaken?
