Title: Calibration puck for Nec PA271w
Post by: Paul2660 on June 11, 2012, 05:14:44 pm
I have a NEC 3090 with spectra vision.  The puck that came with the monitor is the MDSVSENSOR, which
states it is to be used with the wide gamut displays.  I noticed that the NEC PA271w ships with the MDSVSENSOR2,
which appears to be a newer model of the puck.  I know I can download the latest version of spectraview, but I am wondering
if my older generation puck will be OK with the 271w.

Thanks
Paul

I called NEC yesterday, and they felt that there would be no difference.  The puck with the 3090
is one designed for the wider gamut so it should work fine.

That might be true, but you just purchased this, there's no reason why you should have received a older model as the newest model has been out sense late last year, and the newest model is much improved over the older model.
I would send it back, and request the latest model, if not get your money back and go somewhere else.
NEC Spectra Sensor Pro is the latest model.

Possibly the OP did not purchase directly from NEC?  In that case, he couldn't expect NEC to swap sensors.

I was trying to save a few hundred dollars, in that you can purchase the 271w about $250.00 less if you don't get it bundled with the puck.

I have spectravision and you can install on instance of the license on multiple machine, (thank you NEC).   Most places sell the 271w with and without
the puck.

The software will support both MDSVSENSOR2 and original. The newer instrument is a better instrument but you should be fine using the original on either display.

In fact, I got my PA271w with the full Spectraview pkg a few months after it first came out and it came with the MDSVSENSOR, REV C (not MDSVSENSOR2).
It works fine but I do wonder what I'm missing out on. Andrew, do you know what would be gained by upgrading?
By the way, I watched one of your videos on RetouchPro---very helpful.
Thanks

I'll answer my own question...mine is the MDSVSENSOR2 despite being labelled otherwise. NEC could've made this easier and added the 2!
From NEC web site:
My NEC color sensor says "MDSVSENSOR" on the front. Is it an MDSVSENSOR2 or original MDSVSENSOR version?
If it says "Custom Calibrated for Wide-Gamut NEC Displays" then it is an MDSVSENSOR2.
