Title: Stills from the BlackMagic Cinema Camera
Post by: billy on May 22, 2012, 05:43:53 pm
With the yet to be released BMC you will have the ability to pull 5 mb stills from the footage as a DNG file. Pretty cool. I did the math and it seems that the file will be roughly 5.5 inches x 3 inches at 300 dpi. My question is how big of a print ad would a file like this comfortably produce? I know it will most likely not be sharp like a still from a still camera. I am ok with that.

Any other comments regarding pulling stills from footage like the Red is welcome. Just trying to see what this BMC will be capable of.

There are curently magazines editos shooted with the Epic. Red footage printed is very nice I must say.

Resolution is not really what matters most.

Red has the look, it doesn't guarantee that other brand-system will have a similar quality.

On the Hacked Gh2 or an Alexa, you can double the size and with some photoshoping it would suit an edito if the content is good. You can even play with this "lack" of reso.

In terms of human beings are concern, I think that we already reached too much digital resolution in still-holly-land. Unless you are doing museum galleries. More and more ADs and editorial houses are going back to less reso and more content. Red footage IMO shines in print.
