Title: PA271W, Macbook Pro (mid 2010 15" i5), Display Port, 2560x1440?
Post by: JPenn on May 15, 2012, 03:44:14 pm
Hi,

Own a Macbook Pro (mid 2010, 15", 2.4 GHz i5 running 10.6.8) and just bought an NEC PA271W display. I have it connected with a Startech (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX28230) mini Displayport to Displayport cord. At 1920x1080, 60hz, everything displays fine on the PA271W. If I change the display on the PA271W to 2048x1152, 60hz or 2560x1440, 60 hz the screen starts flashing horizontal bars of noise all over the display. I don't know much about these things but it seems like a refresh rate problem.

Should it be possible to make full use of the high resolution capability of this display using my laptop and the displayport cord?

Thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide.

Cable may be the problem. Search Digilloyd's site http://www.digilloyd.com/  He loves this monitor and has found the same issues as you. He also has a fix. I only use the NEC display port cable per his recommendation and have no problems with the exact setup as you.

I only found a reference to a sleep issue. I'll try buying the NEC brand cable though, and hopefully that will be the fix.

Thanks.

I have two of the NEC PA271W's - the NEC cable is the answer for Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, etc.

This is NEC's notice on the issue (http://www.necdisplay.com/documents/Miscellaneous/DisplayPort_Notice.pdf).  You can get a cable direct from NEC (http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop%20-monitor%20-misc/pa-mdp-cabl).

You were right. Just picked up the NEC cable and it worked like a charm. Awesome! Thanks so much.

Glad to hear it resolved the problem. It sure stinks that third party manufacturers can't manage to get the pins correct on a such an easy and inexpensive standard to implement (it is royalty free and is not nearly as problematic as HDMI in terms of SNR). In addition to NEC's cable, which I have and use daily, I have also used dongles, such as this one http://www.hightech.com.hk/us/product2-667.shtml along with a DisplayPort cable successfully.
