Title: Sony NEX-7 cable release?
Post by: RBland on April 23, 2012, 02:42:13 pm
I have just learned that there is no cable release on the NEX-7. A tripod is a must for me in many shooting situations.
My questions is, is there really no way to use a wired remote with the NEX-7? According to some other forums, an IR remote release will work but with limited functions.
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks

There are a few options I have found.  One is the Sony Remote Commander, this will allow you to release the shutter remotely but that is about it.  Works
well.

There are several other non-Sony timers out on the web.  They all seem to interface through the IR port.  I have the one from Tempus which is an interval timer.
I have not used it in the field, but worked with it a bit when I first got it and it does work.  Only issue is that you have to figure out a way to attach it to the
camera.

As for a true wired remote, Sony does not have one, that I can find.

It seems that the only possibility is the IR port. Vp-systems.eu from Finland offers the following components:

The CAMremote can control following features on NEX-5/7 using infrared port:
- Shutter release
- Shutter release in bulb mode
- Movie recording start/stop

Following items can do the job:
http://vp-systems.eu/order_cr.html#SET-CR2-PRO
http://vp-systems.eu/order_cr.html#CABLE-IR
http://vp-systems.eu/order_cr.html#RC-RXTX8 (optional if you don't have radio control and need it. Also 4-button and 12-button transmitters are available)
http://vp-systems.eu/order_cr.html#CABLE-9V (optional if you don't use hobby RC radio which could provide power to CAMremote)

Is it just me or does this seem like a serious error on Sony's part? I could see just offering a wireless cable release, but to not even offer a model specific wireless release is just, just, well, beyond bad. And I must have missed it if it was brought up in Reichmann's otherwise excellent review. I was just about to order a Nex-7 but I will have to re-evaluate against the Panasonic and Olympus again.

It's an over site if you are planing to use the camera in the remote environment.  I was surprised when I found out that
Sony did not have any type of interval timer for the Nex7 or as far as I could tell, even the A77.  I think they had one
with the A900 and A850, but both of those are long gone for now.

The Olympus Evolt-E510 uses the miniUSB to attach a remote cable.
In the manual of the Nex-7 the miniUSB port is described only for file transfer between the camera and the computer.

Also the Phottix Strato for Sony can't be used on the Nex-7 because of the missing remote port.
http://www.phottix.com/en/studio-accessories/phottix-strato-receiver-only-for-sony.html

Here is a DIY solution TimeLapse/Timer for NEX5/NEX7 (in german) for the Nex using the IR port:
http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/sony/35299-timelapse-timer-nex5-nex7.html

It seems that we have to switch to the bigger (but cheaper) Nikon D3200.

If you own an iPhone, it's easy.  Just buy a cheap IR trigger on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Remote-for-Iphone-Ipod-IR-HTC-Nokia-Samsung-Android-DSLR-NEX-/160774374986?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item256ee6464a#ht_572wt_1378 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Remote-for-Iphone-Ipod-IR-HTC-Nokia-Samsung-Android-DSLR-NEX-/160774374986?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item256ee6464a#ht_572wt_1378)

and then download the "Nexremote" app.  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nexremote/id420116603?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nexremote/id420116603?mt=8)

You get not only an intervalometer, but also Twitter integration.  ;D

There is also this iPhone app, which I haven't tried, but also apparently works with NEX:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dslr.bot/id385242427?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dslr.bot/id385242427?mt=8)

If you don't have an iPhone, you've got this more expensive Tempus option, as mentioned above:   http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-NEX-7-wireless-intervalometer-for-time-lapse-photography-/221008714846?pt=Camera_Camcorder_Remotes&hash=item3375255c5e#ht_1639wt_1156 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-NEX-7-wireless-intervalometer-for-time-lapse-photography-/221008714846?pt=Camera_Camcorder_Remotes&hash=item3375255c5e#ht_1639wt_1156)

Thanks for the replys, but a simple cable release would have been a no-brainer. Do photographers get any imput in the design at Sony? And all these glowing reviews of this camera and no one points out this ommision. In most cases I like to take several bracketed expoures to create my finial prints, (not HDR, but using layers) and I need to take them as close together as fast as possible. I wish there was an "head banging the wall" emoticon to use. I am stuned that this was not addressed in the lengthy, glowing review of this camera posted on this very web site. Sorry to vent but "come on man"!  :o

"Firstly" that is funny, just what I needed after an eleven hour work day.
Guess it is on to Nikon for me. Goodby Sony and Canon!

I might be missing something here, but if all you want is a cable release, using the timer will suffice as an alternative.

Or the wireless remote I would think.
