Photograph of red fox "at twilight". This image was actually taken in daylight but it seemed to become a bit more atmospheric with the background desaturated slightly.

You have a very sharp focus on the fox, and a shallow focus as well so the fox will really stand out. Too bad about the foreground branch, but some things are out of our control. I have very mixed feelings about the desaturation of the background (and foreground). In my personal view, having the subject in color with the rest of the image in B&W is too much of a gimmick, and its history of digital processing stands out like a sore thumb. Also, because you did only "partial" desaturation, we're now left with spots of color here and there, and I find that to be quite distracting, to the point that I'd say to go all the way if you're going to desaturate the area surrounding the subject. Still, it's hard for me to imagine a background that I'd want to "reduce" by taking away its color, especially with a shallow DOF, but I need to emphasize that's my personal bias.

Nice picture. You need to clean up the parts of the image in the background that have color in them. I like all the sharp detail in the fox, and the way the fox is looking out of the picture.

Well no. I was not trying to get rid of all colour in the background - just subdue it a wee bit so that the fox seemed to be hunting at dusk. I would like to have had the patience to get rid of the bramble stalk that lay in front of the beastie.

Bright green. The only adjustment was to reduce the saturation of the green a lot and the luminescence of the green a little.

Doesn't that complimentary colour make the foxy red seem even more foxy red? (Or is it more of an orange-brown than complimentary red?)

Yes, I prefer the original colours: the rich colour, the brightness, the higher contrast, the sharp focus, the face - all help keep my attention on the fox rather than on the undergrowth. (The greens don't seem bright to me.)

I kind of like it more with the desaturated background. The original looks good also.
