Title: New Epson 7900
Post by: prepper on January 18, 2012, 11:27:02 am
Hi, we've just switched from an HPZ2100 to an Epson 7900 and what I need to know is whether to shut the printer off at night and on the weekends, 3 days, or just leave it on all the time like HP had us do with the z2100?  The HP cycled every 12 hours and kept itself ready to go, but what does Epson recommend, anyone here know?
Thanks

Epson printers to not constantly prime the nozzles like the HP and Canon printers, and so best practice is to power them off, which seals the head.

I have inadvertently left mine on for extended periods of time (several days and over a week a couple of times) and while I had to clear a few clogs from a couple of channels i'm not sure it was anything worse than had the printer been off.  On the other hand, I shut my printer off each night and rarely have a clog the next day, but I've found if I forget to shut it off overnight I seem to always have a couple of nozzles that need cleared.

Ok, thanks Wayne.  Kinda confirms what I've seen in the 2 weeks we've had it, started having clogged nozzles and cleanings right off the bat 2 or 3 mornings and wondered why on a new machine, so we'll try shutting off every night and see what happens.

One other question if I may, our usage will be low so we bought the 150ml cartridges, the 350ml ones would be about a 28% savings over time though, any problem with inks sitting in the cartridges over many months, say 12-24?  Do you think better to stick with smaller ones in this instance?

Thanks again,
Terry

I always recommend using one size larger cartridge for the LK at least, sometimes all 3 blacks.  Printer uses a lot more black ink, especially LK than any other color.'

Many users (myself included)  have gone over a year with no ill effects.  I remove the cartridges every 6 to 8 weeks after they are about 6 to 9 months old, turn upside down and gently agitate for a couple of minutes.  I also then leave them sitting upside down for 5 minutes or so then reinstall. I normally pull about 4 of them at a time, holding them together while agitating.
