Title: Your best/favorite image of 2011
Post by: feppe on January 01, 2012, 07:14:11 am
Happy New Year! Let's see your best or favorite image from last year, or alternatively something to do with New Year itself.

Here mine from last night, of the latter category. 2012 (hopefully) shining bright with 2011 (thankfully) fading into black.

Here's my favourite landscape shot of 2011.  The calm and peacefulness of witnessing dawn on the north rim after a good hike in starlight was special.  This photograph prints pretty well too.

Nice image Slobadan. I've never seen that in the winter. That is the Crown Fountain in the winter designed by Juame Plensa. In the warmer months there are faces of the people of Chicago facing each other on those towers blowing water out their mouths at each other. I was one of 4 videographers who shot all those faces.

Well Slobodan, I like your image a lot and even more when I saw it larger, as I was able to see more detail. To me it has the appearance of slide film. The juxtaposition of the elements is wonderful.

This is one of my favourite images of the year. Not often I get to use a horizontal pan to convey a landscape. I am pleased with the way it turned out and the simplicity of colours and forms.

Okay, not really my genre, but of what I've effed about with, this one takes my fancy somewhat. Games with reflex lenses.

Another thing I found and liked last year was this:

http://youtu.be/xZliiH0xTIo

Why? becaue part of the thing was shot just about 150yds from where I live - there's a moment with a big billboard frame - it isn't any longer there; there's a holiday complex instead. You wonder I hate tourism? (Why can't it stay the early 80s forever - or any time from the mid-50s?)

Apart from that, I was still young, as was my wife; we were together and our son and his bird were out here on holiday staying with us; an age of optimism, almost as much as were the 60s. That darker-haired girl in the vido probably represents what I liked best in females, as well as their clothes.

I shall dream for hours now - probably even forget to do the lunch dishes and go out for a coffee.

;-)

Hey Rob, I really like the image. Didn't much like the video though. But I take your point about dreaming and why, as you're melding memories with images and reality. To me, your image works and is evocative, just like a dream!

Some wonderful images here so far. One of my favourite photos I tokk last year was from a beach in Southwest Portugal that I often visit. This time I had permission from the missus to stay until late, so I just sat down and enjoyed the peacefulness of the place, the mist the fading light, and the gentle breeze. This was shot the day after Christmas.

I narrowed my personal 2011 favorites down to four images and noted that two fit Russ's approved type: Landscape with Hand of Man, while the other two did not have the RSL-required item.

Anyway, I think this old machine is my current favorite.

Rob C
"I'll get round to fixin' it later..." reminds me of a farmer I once knew. I was visiting him and his wife in their kitchen one day, and noticed they kept a big kettle of water on the wood stove to have a ready supply of hot water whenever needed. I also noticed both hot- and cold-water pipes coming to their kitchen sink.

When I inquired, I learned that they had fetched water in buckets from a nearby stream for quite a number of years. Why? Well, it seems the pump in their well had quit, and when the farmer took it apart, he found that there was just one little part needed, probably worth about 39 cents. He contacted the pump maker and learned that his pump hadn't been manufactured in over forty years, and the part was not available.

He wasn't willing to shell out for a whole new pump when all his needed was a simple little part, so he hauled water by hand for the rest of his life.

I suspect he imagined that when he had time, he'd figure out a way of jury-rigging a replacement part...later!

dear people,

I's hard to find my best picture, but one series impressed me most. On the 19th of November I had an appointment on one of the islands in the "waddensea" , Ameland, in the north of the Netherlands. During the drive to the ferry the fog became thicker and thicker, so much that I wasn't worrying about being late for the ferry anymore; it would have been delayed anyway. I embarked as the last passenger and irrisistably I went upstairs to the highest decks for the big views in the mist. The Ferry left, and in a few moments the sun started to burn hesitantly through the fog. I put the 2.8 180 on the d700 and started to report about the sun, the fog, the water, the birds and the mudbanks. It really felt as "writhing with light". Somewhat later blue sky appeared and I changed to 20mm wideangle.
Later, at home, when the rush was over, I felt that I had been looking in the the creation of mother earth herself and I realized those images were special.
The "waddensea" is a world heritage nature reserve, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadden_Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadden_Sea) and the only place in the netherlands where we can experience truly wild nature, active geology. link to the album on picasa:

This may be my favorite because I almost deleted it. It was very dull and lackluster raw from the camera. It is an HDR done in SNS-HDR Pro.

I was photographing an old abandoned bridge over the river and just before I left, took this just for the heck of it.

degrub, thanks. I have been championing SNS-HDR Pro and this is one of the images that made up my mind. I find that SNS can give very natural looking results if desired. I call this the 'slightly enhanced reality' or 'natural dramatic' look. The blending of the tones and color in SNS is the best I've found-no harshness-and I have most of the major HDR programs.

I'm always in love with my latest shot. Here is my latest from the Salt River near Saguaro Lake, near Apache Junction AZ,  taken Tuesday morning. I visit this spot every year during this two week period when this tree is at its maximum color. The sun comes over the mountain at about 9 am and at 9:40 lights up this tree while the background remains in shadows.

Very nice. The B&W are terrific. Your rendering of the sky in "Breaking Storm Over Kane Creek Canyon" & "Storm Light at the Fiery Furnace" is very well done.
