I will be visiting the U.S. during Dec - May and would like to shoot at Olympic N.P in Washington State. I would very much like to attempt to shoot a variation on the shot I've enclosed as an attachment.
Can I ask does anyone know when it is best to shoot this image. Is it for example a low spring water, high spring water or neap high or neap low ?
Any advice and or reference to website info' would be hugely appreciated.

Oh and I forgot to ask what time of year is best ???

I've discovered this is taken at a very low tide, in other words a low spring. I still don't know what time of year is best for the sun angle.
Anyone ?

I've shot Shi Shi a couple times before, it's a cool location.
Another variable on the fins shot is the sand. Weather/waves move sand in and out and can cover the fins to a large degree. Simple answer is that I'd plan on shooting with whatever you get when you're there. Weather is variable, it's a long drive from anywhere, and it's a 4 mile hike each way (1 mile of nice trail, 1 mile in mud & water, and 2 miles on the beach). Plan on making a couple visits if you can.
Check out Marc Adamus's image from there. He's got a great one, as do Chip Phillips and Kevin McNeal. If you trust the EXIF on Kevin's shot, his sunburst image was taken on July 31st so you won't be able to get that shot. I think the stuff with good water in the fins may be taken in the winter when storms scour out the sand... but that's no guarantee either. I've shot in January and the fins were fairly well covered then too.

Thanks very much, it sounds like a bit of hit and miss but if I go on a spring low and am prepared to come back later I may get somewhere.

The best way to get this would be to camp there, 4 miles along that trail in the dark is no fun, I think that was one of the muddiest hikes I've done.

Man, oh man is that true!
The first time I went there, we shot sunset and hiked out in the dark. And I had forgotten my headlamp, only my buddy had one. Took forever, and I was filthy at the end of it.
Second time we camped on the beach and shot sunset and sunrise. Not much color for sunrise, but I did like watching the moon set in the morning.

I would just go when you can get a low tide at sunset or sunrise. There will be lots to shoot regardless.

If the whole hike/camp thing gets too daunting, there are some other very nice beaches in that same area. Ruby Beach, First Beach, Second Beach come to mind. Here is one from Ruby Beach (not in the same league as Shi Shi, but a five minute walk from the parking lot):

I second Ruby Beach! This was taken at high tide, however it took 5 nights at this same spot to get this, I found the sunsets to be rare.

Sanfairyanne, not sure if you will see this now as I just saw your Nov post on Shi Shi Beach and visiting it sometime by May "12? If this is still of interest let me know as I have been there seven times now and have three pictures on my web site at tmortensenimages.com. Could discuss this further and lead private tours there and best time is Oct-May as fog frequently June-Sept. thanks, Todd M.

Wolf, Thanks for call back and the feedback, "Yes" first time doing any forum and came across info on Shi Shi Beach. I will look to follow back tomorrow to introduce and participate more. Thanks again. Todd
