With the half price sales on Lightroom 3, are we expecting version 4 soon? Are there any rumors? How does the timing match up with past upgrade cycles?
-
Lightroom 1 February 19, 2007
Lightroom 2 July 29, 2008
Lightroom 3 June 8, 2010
ightroom 4 maybe April or May???
-
Can you show me were the half price sale is because I need to buy it :o

You need TARDIS to go there.

If you're a student / teacher, have a student/teacher in your family, or know a student/teacher who will cooperate, you can get the Student and Teacher edition for about $70 (search Google). It's the full product, too, not a cut down version, as near as I can tell.
-
The sales I've seen have been for very limited times and then they expire. I'll try to remember to post a link here when I see another one.
-
Re student versions read the fine print. OK to use IF you qualify. Don't expect reduced price upgrades though.
-
In general, the next Student edition will cost less than the upgrade cost of the full version anyway, so the lack of an upgrade price is hardly an issue.
-

And I know people who can get copies of Lightroom for much less than that too! If you are taking the time to visit LL I would assume that you are a keen photographer - in which case is the full price really so high for such a brilliant piece of software? Just buy it - if you take the time to learn how to use it you wont regret it I can assure you.

Bob, is there some functionality you are desperately needing? Just curious :)

I'd like:
Soft proofing (isn't that on everyone's list?)
A healing brush instead of a heal spotter
The ability to create custom metadata sets for display (without Jeffery's sometimes awkward plug in)
The ability to create new metadata fields
A tool to merge keywords (such as after importing a catalog)
Arrows on each adjustment slider to use in making slight bumps (without going to the keyboard)
Nothing earth stopping - just some evolution
-
And add some more layout capability in the print module, notably prettier and more configurable text overlays...

+1. I would like better text layout capabilities as well.
-
The ability to store stacked photos in any folder...

Adorama is running the same sale on Lightroom and I saw an even better price on Buy dot com another $25 cheaper ($125) !
-
$125 is really good for LR. I am new to the software and love it!
-
And one more thing:
The ability to select an image in a collection and jump to that same image in it's "home folder." You can jump to the folder now, but not to the image within the folder.
-
Right click the thumbnail and choose Go to Folder in Library

I know. That's what takes you to the folder, but not the image. Once you're in the folder, you still have to hunt around for the image.
-
I'm not sure why it's not working for you. I tested a few times before I replied, and regardless of whether the image was selected in the collection, the context menu reliably takes me to the right item in its folder.
-
I would like to be able to duplicate the folder structure using exported (e.g.) JPEGs + corresponding lightroom catalog. That would be nice for being able to view my images on another PC at 2MP without having some network share.

Doing both for me...

OK, I got it. If you have a virtual copy in a collection and its stack in the library is collapsed, the Go To Folder In Library command can't find it. If the stack is expanded, the command does find it. Maybe its a feature, but I think the menu name should be changed and it should open a stack and select the image in the library.
I was thrown off by the menu item's name: Go To Folder In Library. It doesn't say go to image in library.

Michael may have spilled the beans on the What's New page. "Sean Reid, a long-time contributor to this site, has just published a very extensive field review of the Fuji X10 based on working with RAW files converted in a beta version of Lightroom." Hmmmm, I wonder what features are with it.

Prolly LR 3.6 RC.

I was recently on a Photo workshop with a well known Lightroom beta tester who writes books on LR. He let slip his new revised book on LR 4 goes to his publisher in Feb 2012 and that we could see a Beta released very soon. He also sugested some big interface changes and a few surprises were to come but was pretty tight-lipped about what He had the beta version of LR4 on his laptop, but of course we didn't get to see it! He indicated that the beta contained only around 60% of the final functionality of the release version.
Judging from comments from Jeff Schewe in the LL "From Camera to Print & screen", soft proofing was dropped from LR3 at the very last minute, therefore I'd expect it to play a significant role in LR4.
Let's hope there's not long to wait.
-
I'd love to see a true clone stamp tool. The current clone and healing tools are just too crude to be of much use.
-
Select (click on) the image first, then right-click and choose "Go to Folder in Library".
-
Sounds like LR4 is imminent, or at least the beta release is.

it sure is... some beta testers leaked (or allowed it to be stolen) CS6 (= ACR7, = LR4) several month ago - there was a thread @ http://forums.adobe.com/community/cameraraw (it got deleted naturally) that was mostly about dpreview people posting versions of ACR used in testing (that were not yet publicly released, even in beta form).
-
Anyone who knows can't say, anyone who says can't know.
I wouldn't take purported leaks to indicate the proximity or otherwise of anything.
-
anyone who says can't know.
They can know but will get in a boat load of trouble and will never have the opportunity know again. But yes, your point is well taken.
-
Well yeah, true, Andrew - but less poetic to write :-)
-
They can know but
just google... for example : http://www.acobra.ru/blogs/foto_programmist/in-the-vacation-trip-so-you-can-not-.php
screenshots of ACR7 posted (~1.5 month ago), looks like a very production quality to me
-
so LR Beta 4 released ;D ;D ;D ... now where is our ACR7 Beta ?

Are you sure ? http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/01/lr4betanowavailable.html
Sometimes you just need to look at what leaks there are and how credible they are. It's always the case that there are mistakes and people let loose information a day or two early before the announcements.

Says in that article that Mac 10.6 or later required. Hope thats wrong as I have no desire to upgrade my 10.5.8.
-
It also won't install on Windows XP. That had better change on release, XP has a huge user base and people won't upgrade their OS just because the latest LR version won't install.

As per my other post, don't hold your breath. I'd expect PS 6 to do the same in fact, along with lots of other new versions of things.
Setting an OS minimum that is < 10 years old is not unreasonable in modern IT environment. (In my oppinion)

What they do with PS CS6 doesn't bother me much as I won't bother to upgrade anyway.
The point regarding XP is that it still has a huge user base, despite it's age. It was still being supplied as the installed OS on many systems just two years ago.
In my custom profiling business I've dealt with more XP users in the last year than any other OS variant.
I'm puzzled what feature arrived with Vista that is so necessary to LR4 that they'll abandon such a large market segment.
-
I would note that under the "high level summary of what is new" is 'SOFT PROOFING REINVENTED' It will be nice to explore how this works and whether it is different from PS soft proofing.

There are significant differences and improvements soft proofing in LR compared to Photoshop. As shown here:

Andrew, any chance of getting a non-QT version of that video for those of us who don't like Apple products?

You don't need an Apple product to view a quick time video. Or even commercial software for that matter!

Yes, but to do that I need to download the clip to my hard drive. I can't stream it from Andrew's site. I've got VLC set as my default media player for MOV files, have the latest version installed and have the Mozilla plugin installed. Won't stream the clip.

Thank you! That was very useful. That feature alone will make me buy LR4 when it´s out of beta!

Very sure. The *only* reliable source is the vendor. You can play all the guessing games you want and you might get lucky and you might even use some appropriate deduction to make an informed guess, but it's still guessing :-) Of course, it's fun to guess and good luck to all who want to give it a go!
