Title: sony nex fs100
Post by: billy on July 29, 2011, 06:37:02 pm
wondering if any users of it can tell us what they think regarding;
-image quality
-dynamic range
-blown highlights when shooting outside backlit lifestyle
-autofocus?
-processing the footage
-using with Zeiss ZE canon mount 50mm lens

I have found plenty of reviews online but would love to hear from some of the regulars here. I have been shooting the 5d and am looking for something easier to use / dedicated video camera. I was hoping to wait for RAW video but cant afford what RED is offering right now and dont have much time to wait for them to release the epic-s, or for canon to release a rumored raw video cam.

I have a few post on my blog www.dslr4real.tv

-image quality
its nicer than a dslr - not so much sharper but with no colour alaising

-DR
to me DR is defined by the ability to roll to white

-blown highlights
this is the major challenge of the camera - i dont think it is as good as a 5d because the roll off can go plastic

I have the settings tuned to ramp up the contrast rather then reel it in
I think this reduces the plastic
(my settgs are the entire opposite of wide DR settings which IMO show up these problems really badly)

-AF is pretty amazing

-on my mac I go with clipwrap then streamclip

it adds one (quick) step to the post process
other methods may work

With no aperture canon lenses you are in trouble

50 is also quite long (IMO) with a S35 chip - Id look for an old 35 prime

Generally the camera is fantastically practical for using (sound etc) but the 5d my still win on style points for the image

(as opposed to technical points like LPI )
