Title: Video camera rec needed
Post by: PeterAit on July 26, 2011, 08:27:55 am
I am looking for suggestions for a dedicated video camera. Nothing pro-level, just for vacations and family. I want a camera that records on memory cards and with a good optical zoom range. Good sound recording, particularly wind resistance, would be a plus. Thanks!

What's your budget?

What's your budget?

Under $500 would be nice, but could be higher if needed.

Check the various review sites and see which ones look like they meet your needs: Some useful
Examples:http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder.htm (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder.htm)
http://www.videomaker.com/learn/product-reviews/digital-camcorder-reviews/ (http://www.videomaker.com/learn/product-reviews/digital-camcorder-reviews/)

http://simplydv.com/index.php (http://simplydv.com/index.php)
http://www.dv.com/inreview (http://www.dv.com/inreview) You'll need to search for camcorders you're interested in.
When you find something you're interested in, check the user reviews at Amazon to see what users, not reviewers, think.

You should be able to find something that you like at that price point.

Here's my pick: Canon Vixia HF R11 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749203-REG/Canon_4383B001_VIXIA_HF_R11_Dual.html

Second option: Sony HDR-CX160: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/748413-REG/Sony_HDR_CX150_HDR_CX150_16GB_HD_Handycam.html

The Canon is better since you can connect an external mic for those nasty occasions when wind is a problem. None of the entry-level camcorders (or even professional ones) have good windjammers.

Thanks! The Canon looks good, particularly since the Company will take our non-functioning HV20 in trade and give us a factory reconditioned "new" camera for less than 1/2 the list price.
