Title: Sugar Mill Ruins - Caribbean Islands
Post by: soboyle on July 14, 2011, 03:46:03 pm
I'm working on a project photographing colonial era sugar mill ruins in the Caribbean.
The past 2 winters I've camped on St John USVI for a week or 2 photographing the ruins there. A pretty rich selection because the national park has preserved them from the developers. I'm looking to expand the location to other islands, thinking Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados because there were large numbers of plantations there at one time. But I'm having a hard time finding current information about if there are many ruins left on these island. I'm particularly looking for ruins that have NOT been reconditioned, or only minimally so.

Any thoughts on locations? I've been told that Nevis and St Kitts might be good.
Here are some sample images from St John. Looking for similar ruins at other locations.

Yep, St. Kitts has many sugar mills, some still in good condition, others merely ruins. While I've been to Nevis I don't really recall any sugar mills, although they are bound to be there.

My research shows that the islands with the most number of plantations in the colonial era are, in descending order: Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, St Vincent, Trinidad, Bahamas, St Kitts, Dominica, Virgin Islands.
Any recommended locations for plantation ruins on Barbados, Antigua, St Vincent or Bahamas?

I think your idea is great! Do you have some outcome by now? I would be interested to see the pictures. I personally fell in love with Curacao (http://www.curinfo.com/). It's a beautiful tropical island and I save all my money to travel there. I bet you could take awesome pictures in this place! Have you considered traveling there? You definitely should!

I recently returned from another visit to St. John where I spent some days hiking in the rainforest finding ruins.
Here is a link to some images, I will be adding to that as I process new photographs.
