Title: Leaf Capture 11.5 Released: New GUI with lots of goodies for Aptus-II users
Post by: yaya on May 23, 2011, 04:17:36 am
Leaf Capture 11.5 Link (http://www.leaf-photography.com/products_leafcapture_115.asp)

From the PR:

Leaf is happy to announce that Leaf Capture 11.5 featuring new Leaf GUI (Graphic User Interface) for Aptus-II digital backs, support for lens calibration when shooting to CF card and new firmware updates that accelerate start-up time by up to 50% and speed-up zoom by up to 30% is now available for download.

Leaf Capture 11.5 brings the new Leaf GUI to all models in the Leaf Aptus-II series including Leaf’s latest product, the Leaf Aptus-II 12 80 megapixel digital back.

The new Leaf GUI is more intuitive and user-friendly. Designed with the needs of professional photographers in mind, it offers improved workflow processes and quicker access to important tools through its new menu - favorite settings. The new Leaf GUI’s outdoor theme makes exterior shooting much easier by improving visibility in high glare and reflection situations.

Leaf Capture 11.5 extends the existing Leaf Capture automatic lens calibration feature from tethered mode to enable its use while shooting on the go. Lens calibration files fix effects like lens fall-off and color casts which can appear when shooting with wide angle lenses.

Downloaded and installed.

I t looks better IMO than the last interface. This one is tidier. I like the indoor outdoor settings, good idea that. The startup is significantly faster though I haven't timed it and the zoom is much snappier. I was pleased that the date/time, copyright notice and other customizable info was retained so I didn't have to redo all of that.

Have yet to find how to activate the over under exposure indication. Really must look at the manual.

Good job Yair

Wow, the 50% acceleration in boot time and 30% boost for zoom are very welcome improvements.  The new UI looks great.

Looking forward to hearing back from you, Yair, regarding options for my back.

All the best,
-Brad

On the AFi-ii 12, the start up time went from 23.5 seconds to 13 seconds.  That's helpful.

I see the back now also has firmware v.5.23   -  Yair what image quality improvements might we look for if any?

The firmware is there to support the new interface and functionality. There are some minor fixes for other back models

On Aptus II 12 no start-up time improvement. Weird.  >:(

You should try again after a quick format and a reboot. The first time always takes longer

Strange... shot a couple images after updating all okay, then I entered my information and fiddled with some user settings and now no EXIF data is recorded - no lens value, shutter speed or aperture setting.  What could I have done?

Maybe a tip ;)
You can assign the home button to change the ISO (or favorites).

Installed 24 hours ago, so far so good, especially faster in general, lack try labor intensive. I have an Aptus 10 and would like to work without compression, this version still does not let me, I can not work with CF 64GB at the moment the change is very positive. Attention, I think that once upgraded, you can not reinstall the older version, that can only be done at the factory.

Would someone who has installed the update maybe clarify the advantages? It seems it simplifies a couple of steps (flattens the hierarchy) to make it speedier. Is it really green like it shows?

For the moment, staying pat until the chorus of approvals becomes overwhelming.

The normal display is green, has an option that changes the day a black background with white and is less aggressive. It's easy to get used to the 2 screens.

So far the main advantage is that everything goes considerably faster

Thanks Yair. Crappy CF card here. Now start-up time went to 11 sec.

1:1 or step increment zoom takes about 1 second after first zoom-in. Very nice. And favorites menu is a godsend.

Which CF brand do you recommend concerning speed ?

Geoff,
Besides the faster start up and zoom, the new GUI allows you to get to the features you want more easily - for example as mentioned you can configure the back to use the side wheel button to set iso, push it in and up comes the ISO setting and you use the wheel to select the one you want push again and you are ready to go.   From the main screen you have access to a favorites button which you configure with most used settings coming up first.  There is also a home button.    A lot of the legacy rubric is still there - shoot, edit, camera, but presented in a more efficient way.  Is it perfect? If the name Tufte (http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_ei) means something to you, then most certainly this GUI is a LONG way from perfect. Is it an improvement? Yes definitely.

Eric

One of the key new features is the ability to configure the back to use pre-set lens calibration file off the CF card:

A couple of questions about this yaya - One, do you have to load the LCC files onto every memory card that you shoot? And then do you have to apply the proper file to each shot that is taken, or can you apply them to a group of shots after the fact? (Or have it apply the same correction to a number of shots in a row until you tell it to stop or change to a different file?)

And if you reformat the card, you lose the files, yes? So only reformatting in the computer, then reload the card, but don't reformat in the field....?

Yes you can store them on all your cards

You select the appropriate calibration file BEFORE you shoot, then select another one if you change aperture/ lens displacement. The back uses the selected files instead of the factory calibration which you can of course revert to at any time.

Formatting the card in the filed just removes the images, so all you settings including calibration files stay intact

It's great that the capture update doesn't allow me to shoot tethered with my leaf 65 back any longer. You got to love the support. >:(
