Title: ColorMunki or Spyder - RGB-guns
Post by: Oldfox on April 15, 2011, 04:14:36 am
My old Eye1 Display died or just dont work with my new large gamut monitor (I use Eye-One Match3 software). So I need a new calibrator for the monitor. I am considering ColorMunki or Spyder3Elite. If I got it right Colormunki does not give the possibility to adjust separate RGB-guns.

For the sake of argument lets say that the red gun is -5% of the optimum level. So I figure that Colormunki corrects this with software and Spyder with the red gun adjustment by the user.

Have I got it right and is there any difference with the result?

Are you interested only in monitor calibration?
The ColorMunki can also be used for printer profiling; I suggest you to go ColorMunki + ArgyllCMS + DispcalGUI (http://hoech.net/dispcalGUI/). You can use the "basic" ColorMunki software or ArgyllCMS to get much more...

Go ColorMunki, don’t worry about RGB adjustments on an LCD if using the Munki software, you want to control this in the panel. Should you get something like a SpectraView II which does support the Munki, it will allow this calibration of the panel.

Sorry, I dont understand this, please explain. Panel?

Smart display systems like SpectraView and Eizo adjust the panel itself in high bit. The other systems build a LUT (look up table) in the graphic system which is far less effective. So the more you attempt to adjust RGB, the more banding results in the process. That’s not an issue when this is done inside the panel in high bit.

If I get it right, that does not apply all Eizo monitors, only the Coloredge series. I have Eizo FlexScan SX2461W. What about the original question considering non-Coloredge series?

There's an automatic Eizo EasyPIX2 profiler, that works with ColorMunki spectro and adjusts SX2461W.

Colormunki software adjusts the panel itself (this is probably the same thing as Hardware Calibration in Eizo's terms). The same software can be used with a display that does NOT allow hardware calibration. Ok so far?

So how does Colormunki (or any other) software "know" that you want to use hardware calibration? Is there an option in the software or is it automatic? Does the hardware calibration create a similar profile than software calibration?

btw, there is an explanation of hardware (and software) calibration in Eizos pages: http://www.eizo.com/global/products/coloredge/calibration/04.html (http://www.eizo.com/global/products/coloredge/calibration/04.html)
But it does not answer my questions above.

ColorMunki software adjusts graphic card LUT, not the display. But you can use EIZO EasyPIX2 software with ColorMunki, that automatically adjusts the display internally. It's not full hardware calibration - there's no TRC linearization (like in ColorEdge), but so or so it gives decent results.
