Title: Bridge and viewing uncompressed file size of JPEGs
Post by: robcrandall on April 01, 2011, 05:26:24 pm
Is there a simple method to view the uncompressed file size of a jpeg while in Bridge, without actually opening the jpeg?

thanks,
Rob Crandall

Yes. You set the viewing parameters to display any info (under each thumbnail) you want in the program's prefs.

Thanks Chris. Compressed file size is easy enough to display, but I can't seem to locate "Uncompressed File Size" is any of the Prefs or Metadata Fields. I end up having to open the JPEG and select Menu-ImageSize and read "Uncompressed Size" from that window. I often have to check dozens of JPEGs with differing aspect ratios. It would be great to just glance at a metadata filed instead of having to open each image individually. I appreciate any help.

Hi,

I checked my early files from when I switched to digital and the camera was set to record both RAW and JPG. Bridge shows the JPG compressed file size, I do not see away to show the uncompressed size, but that size will alway be the same: the native size.

Rob,

In order to have an accurate file size displayed, a file format must be determined. From the Photoshop manual:

Quote
Another factor that affects file size is file format. Because of the varying compression methods used by GIF, JPEG, and PNG file formats, file sizes can vary considerably for the same pixel dimensions. Similarly, color bit-depth and the number of layers and channels in an image affect file size.

By looking at the Image Size dialogue, the info displayed most closely correlates to a flattened, uncompressed TIFF file, but it's not exact.

As far as I'm aware, Bridge does not provide for a file size read-out based on an unknown (to Bridge) file format.
