Title: 4x6 filter on my Canon 17-40mm - which holder?
Post by: haring on February 12, 2011, 05:42:23 pm
So if want to use a 4x6 filter on my Canon 17-40mm (filter size 77mm):

- I need an Cokin XPRO filter holder, and
- a Cokin 77mm XPRO adapter ring.

AM I right?

I would like to use 4x6 Lee or Singh Ray filters.

Thanks a lot! (I have no idea about filters and have never used one...)

Hi Haring

Well, I use a Canon 17-40mm L lens and for filtration I use Lee Filters. The filter thread on the front is 77mm

If you go for Lee then I suggest that you go for the wide angle adaptor over the regular one. What's the difference? That wide version is made so that the filter sits closer to the lens element. By doing this you are less likely to see the line of the filter in front of your lens.

According to Lee's website, they are experiencing a high demand right now. But if you shop around then there are retailers that have them in stock.

If you're still using digital, then I'd just go for the Neutral Density grads of the hard variety.

Why not make life even easier and hand hold the GND's?  It takes a little bit of practice but once you get used to it your workflow is faster and you never have to worry about vignetting.  It also allows you to move the filter during the exposure to minimize evidence of it's use.  I've been hand holding GND's for years now and I never miss having a holder.

Hi,
I have Z/X series holders but I never used because I hold Z/X filter in my hand over the lens.
