I just purchased a Pentax K5 as a smaller walk around camera
In Hawaii there is a sunset or sunrise in many of my shots and from the airplane the gorgeous colors usually include a sunset or sunrise
So for me DR is important thus I purchased the K5 based upon reviews, DxOmark and playing with it at the store.
I figured I'd put the DR to a quick test and take side by side shots of the sun with both the K5 (18-135) and my P45+ AFDII (55-110)
nothing scientific just a quick subjective comparison, images were processed in C1 with the same settings then post processed in CS4 with the same adjustments. I made no attempt to make them look the same ie color, sharpening etc just processed the same and cropped the P45+ 4x6

Needless to say I'm quite pleased with the K5 it will serve its purpose well,

Hi,
Thanks for sharing! The images are very impressive! I downloaded the RAW-files and will play around a little bit with them in the evening. No I need to go to office so I earn some money so I can buy photo stuff ;-)
Best regards
Erik

I like the K5 shot better. More birds.

Hi,
I checked the two images for shadow detail and the K5 seems better to me. Impressive! K5 left, P45+ right.
Best regards
Erik

CMOS sensors are now state of the art not second best
DxO mark does accurately quantify a sensor

Hi,
Your images indicate this, in my humble opinion. There may be more to it but that is what I can see!
That said I compared Miles Pentax 645D to Nikon D3X and the 645D was having better shadow detail and in general preferable to the D3X.
Best regards
Erik

Most people are raving about the expanded ISO capabilities of the K5, but the DR is simply amazing. It may be the best DSLR on the market at present, especially for landscapes.

Perhaps the common thread is Pentax their engineers have coaxed more out of the 645d CCD sensor and the k5 CMOS sensor!?Marc

The Pentax K5 is clearly the best option out there for new DSLR users looking for a body they can hold on to for many years! Well done Pentax.
Cheers,
Bernard

Hi Bernard:
I wonder if you could expand on your statement about the K-5? I ask because I’m considering a K-5 or a D7000.

Hi Bernard,
Yes, would be nice if you could elaborate on that opinion. It seems that the Pentax K-series are very well made and the K5 also has excellent image quality. Pentax is one the smaller actors, however. It' also a bit odd that Pentax now has MF digital and APS-C and no full frame.
It seems that you have some knowledge about how things work in the land of the rising sun, so you may have some clues on Pentax market position, future and so on.
Best regards
Erik
