Title: DNG Profile Editor: values do not show while editing
Post by: nilo on December 22, 2010, 05:57:46 pm
Hi,

Is there a trick?

When tweaking with the DNG Profile Editor in the "Color Table" tab, the RGB, Lab and HLS values  show up when you pick a point. Once you move away from there the values obviously  change. Once you are editing, the curse not being over the specific point in the image, no values show up. Please see the attached image to make it even clearer.

Is there a trick to set a "color read out point" like in other comparable software? What's the purpose of these RGB, Lab, HLS values if you can't see them. To see the effect of your tweaks, you would have to find the exact same spot. It seams that this is not an issue, as the DNG Editor is already over two years in Beta, and nobody has changed that? I have the impression that I am fundamentally wrong with my basic assumptions of what those values are meant to be.

If you can, please enlighten me and/or please tell me how to do it.

regards

nino

I've never seen that behavior running 1.0.0.32 on Windows. When I click one of the adjustments in the list on the right, the settings show up on the sliders to the left. Are you running Mac or Windows? Are you sure the adjustments are set to actually do anything (as opposed to just being sample points with no adjustment)?

when you click on a point in the image the RGB, Lab and HLS values show up, yes? Whilst editing, these values still show up and keep changing in accordance with your edits?

I am on Win7x64 here.

to be clearer, I mean the numbers on top, not the sliders!

OK, those only reflect the value of a point in your open image (if you have an open image), when you hover the eyedropper over a point in the image, not samples already selected for adjustment on the right. Whether this is by design or an oversight I don't know.

Thank you John for trying to help. I find it very disturbing that there is no possibly to see how the RGB/Lab/HSL numbers change in while editing. What's the point of including them at all then? Are you able to find the exact same spot in a real scene, to see what has changed. I don't understand this?

The values are meant for numeric RGB readouts of the cursor point only, by design.

DNG PE is primarily intended for visual-based profile editing (i.e., look at an image while making adjustments to the control points).

I guessed that, but what is it good for? If I can't fix it to see a before after, I can see little any use for it. Maybe checking for clipping?

So there is little difference to the old style color editors like in C1, except that there I can yes have real cursor point read outs.
