Title: Iceland #10 - Liquid Gold Abstract
Post by: Josh-H on September 14, 2010, 08:11:09 pm
Of the ten shots I have posted so far this is the one I am least sure about - abstracts are so very difficult to carry off well.
This was shot at about 2am in the morning and is the midnight sun reflections on an amazingly calm arctic ocean about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Iceland.
Would really appreciate thoughts as to wether this works. Its pretty much just a straight RAW conversion, cropped slightly. If its no good (sometimes I feel I cant see the wood for the trees) feel free to slam it.  ;D On the other hand, if it works for you - please tell me why.
Ta.

Hi Josh:

Personally, I like it.  No hard and fast rules of photography to throw at you, it just has a nice quiet feel, and I love the sinuous bands of alternating colours.  It's obviously water, but it doesn't shout it.

Mike.

I too find it pleasing for the same reasons as Mike.

I really like this one too. And as a subject, with the title you've given it, along with the explanation of what it is, it has certain environmental messages to convey.

It's great. Wonderful abstraction of nature, colour, light and pattern. I note the top portion is slightly soft, can I assume this is a result of the water moving? Or was the depth of field not great enough? I want to make it clear, it doesn't really matter, the image sings; and keep going with your instincts.

Josh, I really like it. Looks like molten gold floating on oil. Think about that....liquid gold. ;D

I have really been enjoying the great images you have been posting. You must be having a blast, it shows in your work!

Yes Josh, abstracts are hard to pull off well. I like the harmony in this one. It seems to have a regular 'pulse' which links the gold forms into a unified image and has a soft yet strong dynamism.
