Title: Vote for grant to support Center for the Image
Post by: RParker on September 09, 2010, 05:01:50 pm
I am posting this here because it relates to the preservation of digital camera files for future generations.

Mac Holbert (some credit him with inventing fine art photographic giclee printing while at Nash Editions), Stanley Smith (Getty Museum) and Henry Wilhelm (of the Wilhelm Imaging Research, the world’s foremost authority on the care and preservation of photographic images) are competing for a large grant to fund the creation of the Center for the Image.  The center will focus on the problems faced by museums and other cultural heritage organization in creating digital archives that will insure that future generations will have access to the photographic and other art that exists primarily in digital form.  Its mission is to educate and assist institutions and individuals in their efforts to preserve their analog and digital images for the future.

The funding they are seeking is from Pepsi and is awarded by public voting.  This is from the link in their email:

“Each month Pepsi gives away $1.3 million dollars to the ideas that receive the most votes on the PepsiRefresh website. I am happy to report that CFI has been accepted this month, and is in the running in the Arts category to receive $250,000 (only two ideas per month receive this level of funding). To date no idea in the Fine Arts $250,000.00 Category has received funding. Let's change that!”

Each person can vote once per day via the website linked below AND by texting as described (i.e, 2 votes/day).  In the 7 days since the center started soliciting help via this email campaign, they have moved up from 378th to 212th.  With 21 voting days left, the current momentum could carry the day with more people helping.

If you could please help pass this on to the larger photography community, it would be greatly appreciated.
