Post by: sbunting108 on September 03, 2010, 04:09:24 pm
Hello I'm new here! :)

This is a photograph of the Miners Wheel in Highley, Shropshire, UK. Could you please critique this photo?!

Thanks

to me, on my monitor, in the web version, it looks moody, but muddy, posterised...

Is it monochrome film?

Could you have filtered (the colour original) to get better separation between the rock and the background?

I like the composition.

No it is not a monochrome film I originally took it in colour and then converted it to Black and White in Photoshop. I tried to get a greater seperation between the rock and background by altering the red channel and this is the best I can get! As to the posterised I didn't really see it before but I can see what you are saying. Maybe I pushed the conversion too hard.

Thanks Dick :)

Same impression here:
A nice composition which I like, but separation FG/BG is an issue.
I think with a bit of tweaking in post it might come out much better.

OK thanks! I will have a try tweaking it tonight to get a better separation :)

Was this shot on film or in RAW?  I'm going to make a guess that there's a lot of green in the scene given the foliage and grass as well.  What colour is the wheel itself?  Also, where is the white point for the image?   Nice blacks but everything else is a shade of grey.

No unfortunately this was photographed before I switched to RAW :( The wheel itself was black and yes there was a lot of green foliage. I thought the white point is the grass. I toned it to give a slight infra-red look.
