Title: Canon I9900 to Epson 3880?
Post by: wayne2193 on August 26, 2010, 06:54:36 pm
I have had the Canon I9900 for 6 years now and it has performed great. I am considering the Epson 3880 since it now has the $300 rebate.
I am concerned that the colors will not pop on the Epson as they do on the Canon. I know that there is a difference in the dye and pigment inks but is it that much that I will be disappointed?
I also read that you can use the CLI-8 ChromaLife ink in the I9900. Has anyone done this?
I look forward to any additional info you can shed on this.

I have the I9900, Epson 1280 and Epson 3880, forget about comparing pigment and dye inks!  If you want that "Wet" look, super high-gloss and colors that POP, dye inks are still #1 and if you want BLACK-BLACK, dye is the only way to go.  There are still some images I still print with dye only.  However, the 3880 performs better everywhere else, no comparison and if you want, you can coat your prints with hi-gloss lacquers or automotive acrylic urethane.

I never used any inks other than the standard inks for any HP, Canon or Epson printer.

I would wait until after Photokina 2010, who knows maybe a Epson 3900. There's a much better chance for a 4900

I'm hoping Canon will release a 17" IPF5100 successor with Lucia EX inks. The more I think about it the more convinced I am that I will eventually need a 17" printer to complement my i9950..
