Title: LR3 Capture Sharpening
Post by: Kirk Gittings on August 23, 2010, 01:30:57 pm
I've noticed that my old capture sharpening presets for PS 4 ACR 5.7 look like crap in LR3. In LR3 the settings look waaay over-sharpened and have that dreaded orange peel effect. Has the sharpening been completely reworked in LR3 and what are people thinking of for default settings for landscape images? At a minimum it looks like you have to back way off of the detail and raise the Luminance slider in NR

Kirk,
I've been looking into this a bit  especially in relation to my existing Lr 2 library now imported into Lr 3. Have a look at these useful sources of information:

and response 6 & 7 on :   http://forums.adobe.com/message/3037660

They seem to be suggesting exactly what you are doing re detail as well as reducing amount a bit. Do let me know if you find any more information though.   Andy

Commercial Pitch!  ::)

This subject is covered extensively in the Lu-La Guide to Lightroom3 (http://store.luminous-landscape.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=244)

Kirk,

Completely OT but I wanted to mention that while sorting through older magazines and books I happened on the May/June 1997 issue of View Camera, with a very nice portfolio and article on New Mexico's Mythical Places. Having visited NM and Chaco canyon for the very first time just a couple of years ago I found the article especially compelling. Nice work!

Thanks of the kind words. I really appreciate it. I feel very fortunate to have grown up here and had a father who was into photography.

Kirk,
Did you get them shipped OK. Did reducing the amount of sharpening in LR3 (compared with LR2) help in addition to your procedure of backing off the detail and raising noise luminance ?
I assume when you say 'detail' you mean sharpening detail ?

It would be great to know how others are modifying their sharpening/noise when converting process 2003 LR2 images to process 2010 LR3 ....?

Thanks  Andy

Yes, based on my experimentation I backed off the amount and detail sliders and boosted the Luminance noise reduction-then saved that as a preset. This got rid of that orange peel effect but produced a nice sharpening. In all honesty I doubt that my clients could see the difference-but my standards are my standards and those initial results were unacceptable. The settings also seem to require significantly different settings based on minimally different ISO settings. Even 200 ISO vs. 400 required somewhat different settings. I don't think posting my settings would make much sense as they are camera, ISO, output and taste specific.

Don't forget you DID have the option of rendering the images in the original 2003 RAW engine. This would have produced close to the original results.

From what I've read the sharpening and noise reduction have been improved and the RAW engine is improved ( better demosiac algorithms ect.) so files will look different under the 2010 engine.

No one said I wanted to go back to the old way of doing sharpening. It is/was a question of figuring out the new. Since the files had already been imported and converted to DNGs under the new demosaicing algorithm and a fair amount of editing done before I discovered the issue, I was not interested in going back and starting over in a new program with the old algorithm.
