Title: Light fixtures for Solux M16 bulbs
Post by: brianrybolt on August 16, 2010, 07:33:18 am
I just purchased 6 Solux 50w 12v bulbs to be used for the correct lighting environment when printing.  I can not find ANY fixtures that will take these lights.  Virtually everyone in the UK that I have contacted do not carry such fixtures.  My ideal setup would be two spotlight type fixtures that take 3 bulbs per fixture.  Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Brian

I faced the same problem in Poland - I just bought the most common GU10 220V 50W halogen fixtures, changed the mount to GU5,3 type (it fits, so you only have to unscrew the GU10, screw on the GU5,3 and solder the wires) - then you only have to connect a 12V halogen transformer and that's it.

I don't know what is available in the UK, but in the USA Normal Koren describes a setup using fixtures available from the Home Depot, a home improvement store. Perhaps this product is available in the UK.

I couldn't find any in Canada either - I ended up buying the solux task lamp (on wheels) - its maybe too expensive to ship overseas but for my purposes it works fine.

Thanks for the link, Bill

I stumbled onto this thread and have been looking for cost-effective D50 lighting (not exactly D50, but close enough).

I decided to go with the following as it looks to be a great price and easy to set up. I intend to use this track light in my studio, and keep it portable to double as booth lighting at shows. The following order is from http://www.lampsplus.com/

Quote
Pro TrackĀ® 150 Watt Three Light Low Voltage Track Kit (79353)   1   $59.99   $59.99
Pro TrackĀ® Track Lighting Black Outlet Extension Cord (24324)   1   $11.99   $11.99
Recommended Bulb for item #79353 (24250)   1   $9.99   $9.99
Item Total:   $81.97
Tax:$7.17
Shipping & Processing:0.00
Order Total:$89.14

I purchased my Solux bulbs and a fixture from the US dealer - www.solux.net. They have several types of fixtures available. These are not cheap, however. Solux also has introduced PAR20 and PAR30 bulbs for standard 120v sockets.

MR16 sockets are available and, if you are handy, homemade fixtures can be made and powered with a 12v transformer. I have used a lawn and garden lighting transformer acquired at a home and garden outlet.

I know next-to-nothing about this kind of thing so I may be way off, but this place does all sorts of MR16 fittings including multiple bulb fittings and track set-ups:

http://www.sparksdirect.co.uk/advanced_search_result.html?page=2&sort=20a&search_in_description=1&keyword=mr16

"Lamp used: MR16 12V, GX5.3 / GU5.3 with 50W max" sounds like a Solux bulb should work (as far as I can tell!).

I hope this helps. Apologies in advance if it's all inapplicable.

I simply bought several Solux clip-on fixtures (and lamps) and use them all over the place: clipping them on a rack over the printer output tray, onto light stands to make an instant gallery, whatever. Very convenient. I bought them online from Solux.net.
