Title: Captivating Catanduanes - The Island of the Howling Winds
Post by: AdrianT on August 03, 2010, 02:25:56 pm
I would like to share a few images from a recent trip to the awesome Island of Catanduanes in Bicol, Philippines. Critiques and comments are of course very much welcomed.

An undiscovered haven for surfers, beach bums, and of course, coastlascape photographers, Catanduanes (pronounce: Katandwanes) is an island province of the Philippines located in the Bicol Region in Luzon. Its capital is Virac and the province lies to the east of Camarines Sur across Maqueda Channel.  On the island, within about an hour from each other, a wide assortment of locations can be reached -- roaring waves, pristine white beaches, rolling hills and mighty water falls. Rains fall often but short, usually lasting for maybe twenty to thirty minutes at a time. And the howling winds... really something to be experienced.

First stop, Puraran Beach.

The intense morning glow of the Puraran sunrise beat down our backs as I struggled to maneuver between the slippery rocks. The beautiful sky was mesmerizing, and it seemed like no matter what direction I pointed the camera, it was difficult to take a bad picture. The light was just perfect. It was intense, overwhelming, yet soothing and peaceful. Really, there's nothing like a beautiful sunrise to start the day.

The morning colors seem to glow more intensely in Catanduanes than most places I've had the opportunity to photograph. I don't know if it has something to do with this region having the most rainfall than any other part Philippines. Every morning was always visual treat.

Beautiful shots Adrian but I really like Intensity and Life Choices. There seems to be some detail in the dark rock on Life Choices, I would loved to have been able to see more of it... icing on the cake.... fantastic shots though.

Despite the great colors on the other images I like the b/w image best.
I'd like to see more b/w conversions. Good stuff!

it was difficult to take a bad picture.
It was a challenge and you failed to rise to it! Fantastic shots. I particularly like Intensity and High Tide (is there any detail in the rocks on the right or are they intentionally silhouetted?).
