Title: DPReview - have they lost their mind?
Post by: PeterAit on July 08, 2010, 08:06:27 pm
The web site seems to have morphed into garbage. It is wider than my screen, and as I move the mouse around all sorts of unwanted things pop up. More ads than before. What's going on?

Are you running at 800x600? DPReview width is around 950. I just checked and only ~1% of the visitors to my site have less horizontal res than that...

They have a massive site, actual staff, need to turn a profit I'm sure now that they're owned by Amazon, so ads are to be expected. If you don't like the ads, install AdBlock Plus for FF.

I just brought it up.  It has one ad on the main page.

What "unwanted things" are you referring to?  Seems to be pretty common navigation controls.

Much prefer its current layout to the old.

Looks fine here.  Check your system for infections/adware, it's not the site.

I guess you're right, nothing "wrong" with the site per se, just a lot of design changes that I don't like. And, don't these people realize what accepting ads from camera companies does to their credibility?

It looks fine on my computer except that I gave up "looking" at it a few years ago. I had another "look" at it and it confirmed why I gave up "looking" at it. A certain motorbike rider would be considered harmless in among them?

Who should they accept ads from?  Every photo magazine sitting on my desk right now has camera ads...

A certain motorbike rider provides a ton of information.  What harm has he done?

Bingo - and their credibility suffers equally. Did you ever see a camera mag give a bad review to a product from a major manufacturer?

I've actually seen very little information and a whole lot of being utterly obnoxious and of course blatant adobe fanboyism. Perhaps there was information among the insults and nastiness, can't remember much other than 'of course they know better than you'.

Would you care to speculate what they would cost if they didn't contain advertisements? Would you be prepared to pay it?

Advertising is a fact of life. Neither most magazines nor, particularly, most of the web could exist without it. I've seen reviews which indicate quite clearly that the reviewer disliked the product: there are subtle ways of getting the message across. Carrying advertisements damages nobody's "credibility" (this site included, despite the howls which accompanied the addition of the BH logo).

I never suggested that the mags and web sites should not contain any ads - they could carry ads for things they don't review such as retail stores, photo processors, workshops, etc. Of course that is not realistic and is never going to happen. But, when your existence is dependent on income from the companies whose products you are reviewing, your credibility ALWAYS suffers, period. This is not a condemnation of any individuals, it's just a statement of The Way Things Are.
