Title: Hawaii Lens Kit

24-70 will be most useful. you will still need something wider given your mk2's 1.3x. my last visit there ended up with more shots from 16-35 than any other trips. big island and kaui are most photogenic although completely different style. maui is too much a tourist place, don't waste too much time there besides going to the sunrise on haleakala and driving to hana. if you take a chopper ride, stick with your 24-70 with a good polarizer, they dont allow you take on much. dont cut the tripod if you are serious about your photos there. a light one that you can carry on hikes is most desirable as you will need to do a lot of hiking to get to good spots especially on kaui and big island.

In a couple of weeks, I'm traveling with wife to Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. Must travel light and will probably forego taking tripod and more than 1DmkII + 2 or 3 lenses. Interested in landscape and general people and places photography - no surfing long lens requirement. When in Monument Valley last fall and using 10D, I shot well over 80% of large vistas with 24-70/2.8 and missed the 16-35/2.8 only once.

Seeking suggestions on lens combo that will minimize weight and lens changes given variety of subject matter. At this time, I'm leaning towards 24-70/2.8 and 135/2.0. Certainly not the lightest combo but seems to cover what I expect to be the range.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Stealththinker,

Thanks for the advice.  Would you suggest taking the 16-35 in addition to the 24-70 and 135, or perhaps taking just the 16-35 and 24-70?

As far as the tripod is concerned, I agree - it comes with us.
