Title: Lightroom 3 Betas
Post by: John R Smith on March 17, 2010, 07:08:12 am
Is this right that we are now on the third public beta of Lightroom 3? I just got this in my "Adobe Creative News" e-mail -

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM 3

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom® team is proud to introduce the third public beta of its application designed by and for digital photographers.

I din't realise there had been more than one beta, in the Adobe Labs download area it doesn't seem to specify a relaese version.

This is the third time Adobe has released a beta of LR -- there was a beta of LR1, then a beta of LR2 and now (for the third time) a beta of LR3.

They've only released one beta of LR version 3, though.

The first and the second public beta are not LR3 related  - I think they were talking about previous versions (LR and LR2).

Ah, please forgive my confusion. The way the e-mail read it seemed that this was something new (Spring 2010 dated).

Curious. There was a headline story on DPReview earlier today mentioning the new beta complete with luminance sharpening and additional camera support. Now pulled.

I followed the link immediately and ended up with the original LR3 beta package.
It's unlike DPR to break disclosure agreements, so I'd guess Adobe didn't have the package available when promised.

Now THAT quote is being quoted on the LR beta forums. All this discussion or speculation is NOT good for either site, the general public or our friends at Adobe. The less said the better, please. This isn’t (and shouldn’t) turn into DP Review.

A lot of people know a lot of things. The ones who say nothing are the ones who will continue to know such things.

Come on!

Once a cat is out of its bag there's no stuffing it back in. The DPReview preannouncement this morning was clearly a mistake, but as we know, once something is online it lives forever.

Also, Adobe set the cat loose themselves today as witnessed by those that got an email announcement.

I believe that it does a company's credability more harm than good to dissemble when mistake happen, and covering up for  them does a no one any service.

I remain hopeful that there will be some form of video capability within Lightroom to support the new combo cameras.  It's been a PIA to have to download into two separate applications (from Canon G11 and S90).   If this is to be part of LR3, then it should show up in this second beta release.

I have a lot on hold waiting to see Adobe's new system specs.  I've got a new computer configuration ready...but won't move forward until I get a sense of hardware requirements.  The area where I struggle the most is which type of video card is adequate for moderate editing.

I am thinking ahead as once my computer is in place I'll be looking to upgrade my Canon 20D.  This will either be the 7D or 5DIII (I can wait).

True, but its the people who do the stuffing that I find surprising and unnecessary. Its self serving. I guess I was foolish to expect stuffing of that cat by some but not others who don’t need to resort to cat stuffing in the first place.

Geez guys, lighten   up. You'd think Adobe was a subsidiary of Apple. Secret, secret, secret. Was there anyone on the planet that didn't think LR3 (beta x or gold) wasn't going to happen soon. Give us something to speculate about while we wait patiently for things to appear. On second thought, there haven't been any good heavyweight fights recently. SO, have at it (while we wait).

And that’s the goal of those that announce stuff, either with actual knowledge or without, prior to when they should. Its internet, imaging gossip. I thought those who I respect didn’t need to lower themselves to this because I feel its just self serving.

If we need a forum called “made up stuff” fine, or “industry gossip” fine. I’m not trying to give Michael s&*t, I just expected better here. I thought he liked cats and didn’t need to resort to cat stuffing <g>.

This thread is hilarious. Thank you all for giving me a good laugh.

I guess I might as well add my own baseless speculation to the pile: I predict that LR3 will be out sometime in the foreseeable future.

The interesting - and mysterious - thing about the hopefully upcoming release of Lightroom 3 is that no Lightroom 3 books have appeared on Amazon. One has to admire Adobe and their trusted folks who can manage to keep a secret. Perhaps they should consult to the U. S. Government.

I'm keeping my mouth shut...

Well, except to mention now even Terry White from Adobe seems to be giving a premature specification...see: Lightroom 3 Public Beta 2: What's New? (http://tv.adobe.com/watch/creative-suite-podcast-photographers/lightroom-3-public-beta-2-whats-new)

I doubt he'll get fired though...

And I was going to come up with a "cat stuffing" joke, but since I have cats, the visual picture of Mike either being or not being a "cat stuff" created a visual in my mind that well, let me just say it was really, really ugly (and a thought I simply wish I had never had).

Jeff, thanks for posting the video link.
I started watching it but when it hits about 13 minutes of the 19 minute video it just stops.
I noticed on the site their have been a number of comments stating the problems
Hopefully they will get it fixed.

Is Adobe Lightroom 3 Beta 2 available for downloading yet?

OK. But could you possibly include it (the joke) somewhere in the LR3 Tutorial? Or maybe one per episode. It could be the beginning of a whole new career.

They have keyboard covers for that, you know.  Some of them even have keyboard shortcuts customized to your application… twice the usefulness!

OK! Granted. Then any chance of letting the cat out of the bag regarding Jeff's and your (or is it your and Jeff's) next video project, ala LR3???

I don't know if this thread had any purpose to start with, but with all of this talk of stuffing cats and mabe even guillotines for certain leaky people at Adobe, I thought I'd throw in a historical context.  On British Navy sailing ships and some others, flogging was somewhat of a last resort for discipline, bringing a man before the mast so to speak.  Therefore, such discipline was done with some ceremony, and the whip, or cat of nine tails, was carried in a purple or red velvet bag.  Prior to the flogging the cat was let out of the bag.  So there ya go.

And somewhere, someone at Adobe was probably feeling like this yesterday:
