Title: Safari 4.0.5 and wide gamut displays
Post by: adam_k on March 15, 2010, 04:20:35 pm
Hey there
I just downloaded Safari 4.0.5 this past weekend and am running it on 10.5.8 on an NEC P221W calibrated with Spectraview. Since the download it seems like  most websites are displaying .jpgs very contrasty and cartoonish, as if they dont have the correctly color space embeded. But if I go to my site, or friends sites whose work I know is embeded. It still looks off. Anyone have any ideas?
I went into color sync and in spectaview software to make sure the monitor was reading the correct profile. If anyone has any idea's on how to fix this, i'd appreciate it

Did you test the CMM of your browser?

It means that there's something wrong with the calibration of the display.

But maybe there's a bug in the browser? Try to download the test image and open it in Photoshop.

Weird. In photoshop the same banding is on the sides of the images. BUT i did just recalibrate with spectraview and everything looks great again and back to normal. SOOOO i dont know whats going on, except that images are looking "correct" again, yet the test still shows an error, and Im ok with this.

It may be the matter of P221W - it has S-PVA panel, so there are some contrast shifts when you change the viewing angle. And it's hard to calibrate that display precisely.

15" MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.2

The first image (pink)is screen shot from Safari 4.0.5. browser.

The second image (gray) is screen shot from Firefox 3.6 browser.

Maddness - double color management?

I don't really know. It is a 2008 generation MacBook Pro with the white LED backlit screen, but that does not explain the behavior of Safari 4.0.5.

This screenshot is taken from my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad (OSX 10.6.2) on the HP DreamColor monitor using Safari 4.04. Did they screw up the color management with the 4.05 update?

Just updated the MacPro to Safari 4.05 and see no difference in the screenshot on the DreamColor monitor. The DreamColor monitor is presently set and calibrated to "Full Gamut".

There must be something flakey going on with the MacBook Pro and Safari 4.05.

I think the later. I didn’t update on purpose because so many 3rd party utilities (like 1Password) always breaks whenever Apple updates Safari. This odd preview issues doesn’t result in 4.0.4 right? That would point to a bug in 4.0.5.

No, it was just with 4.05 and the MacBook Pro.

Don't see it here. I went to the link using Safari 4.0.4 (looked fine) and then installed 4.0.5 and restarted  and went back to the same link...it still looked fine. I'm running a pre-LED backlight MacBook Pro and OS 10.6.2 but with a second monitor (Eizo CG211) profiled with CED Pro+EyeOne Pro.

Whoopsie.....I just opened the link on the MacBook LCD display instead of the Eizo and, while CM seems to be fine, the TRC test is a bit off. I'm using L* gamma on both displays but obviously (or not) the Eizo is calibrated via monitor LUTs while the MacBook's display is via video LUTs. Maybe just a mismatch of my L* gamma and the modified video LUTs on the Macbook (vs. the "linear" video LUT of the Eizo)?

Interesting.

Naaah - it's rather the magnificient TN 6-bit panel with FRC, poor viewing angle characteristic, nonlinearities in RGB channels and all other disasters harrasing mankind

Using Safari 3.1.1, OS 10.4.11 and my eyeball calibrated Dell 2209WA using Apple's calibrator in Display Preferences shows perfect gray bars while my i1Display calibrated 2004 G5 iMac shows faint colors.

Of course my iMac is quite old and my i1Display is the original, not the i1Display2.

Glad I didn't upgrade my OS.

Complain to Apple. This is nonsense.

don't know if this helps, but I'm running Safari 4.05 on a similar 2008 LED macbook pro and the test image looks good with no problems.

I calibrated/profiled with an iOne display. I'm talking about the computer's monitor, not an external wide gamut display.
