Title: Cray CX1-iWS
Post by: wolfnowl on February 26, 2010, 09:10:58 pm
This obviously isn't going to be for the average home office, but if you're a reasonable-size facility running Windows 7... Cray supercomputers, Dell and Microsoft are collaborating on the Cray CX1-iWS workstation - not much bigger than your average desktop machine, with 12 or 24GB of RAM, 4TB of onboard storage space, etc.  Prices start at $39K US.

I always lusted after a Cray, but I figure the closest I'll get to one is from biting off half of a Crayola.

We recently configured one of these for a departmental database (x-ray imaging) server:

With SAS 15K rpm drives and 24GB Memory it came in well below $10k.  I was very surprised how quiet and cool running it was.
