Title: Filters, particularly polarized

Many thanks for all previous advice - and Merry Christmas to everybody.
Finally managed some shots on the water this morning in full sunshine with my 500D with 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS. The shots look quite good, however, I suspect I should be using a polarized filter ??
What is a UV filter for ?
Assuming you recommend the polarized than is a Hoya OK and if so do I get the CPL or pay more for the Pro1 Digital CPL, or even more for the Super HMC CPL ??
I know you usually get what you pay for but whats realistic for my current set-up ?

Sometimes.  They enhance the profit margin of the store.  Hoya HD polarizers are nice.  Good filters are expensive.

Brad:  You might be interested in this page: http://singhray.blogspot.com/ (http://singhray.blogspot.com/)  Singh Ray makes great filters, but they are expensive.  Still the knowledge is free...

On water, it may cut reflections and that is often needed, yes.

Hi Brad, and happy Christmas to you too.

You might find this article (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/polarizers.shtml) on Polarizers useful.

As far as I can see the main function of a UV Filter is to protect the front element of your lens.
