Title: Tethered or Not, please give your vote.
Post by: julius0377 on November 30, 2009, 02:10:07 pm
The Poll is "multiple choice" where you can select more than one choice. If you shoot with both DSLR's and MFDB's, please respond with the relevant answers by checking multiple of the choices, if you shoot only with one or the other, please tick only one answer pr. question.

The recent Leica S2 review and the (at least for now) slow tethereing speed of this new system poses the question of how important this feature is for photographers in general, and MFDB shooters in particular. I for one shoot mostly tethered, but have no real idea of how widespread this way of shooting is.

Please feel free to comment below on the importance you feel this has, but keep to tethering in general, and not the S2 specifically. This poll and topic is to try and uncover how much shooters tether and why, but not wether or not the S2 is a "dentists" camera or not...

I also put in a bonus question about what connection you prefer. You don't have to answer this, but it could give manufacturers a hint as to what photographers need in this area.

Thanks for replying!

More voters please, we need a nice three digit number for this poll to tell us anything (perhaps even four, but that's unlikely I think...)

USB3 is here now - its already out there on new high end PC's, and will be on Apple's new MacPro's in Q1 next year.
so... we can be both fast and universal.

I thought rumors says Apple may go to fiber optic again.

Please.  I'm still pissed off about FW 800.  Worst connector EVER.... well, next to eSATA.

I agree, yet if S3200 (protocol/standard already launched in 2007) goes forth according to schedule, it will again outperform USB at just about the same time as USB 3.0 reaches market for mid level computers. The advantages of Firewire are:

1. Less CPU intensive. Firewire is peer-to-peer and USB is master/slave, where Firewire demands little or nothing from the CPU, USB transfer rates decline as CPU usage goes up.
2. Firewire delivers more power over the cable. This is of particular interest to MFDB shooters as well as Live View users who go through a lot of batteries if their backs can't run of the computers power.
3. Firewire supports considerably longer cable lengths than USB. USB 3.0 is rumored to increase the possible cable length, but then again Firewire also gets better by every iteration and should keep in the lead as it has done since the first protocol release.
4. Firewire has up untili now been more sturdy in its build, due to manufacturers opting for fragile mini-USB plugs whereas firewire implementations mostly uses the larger standard connectors in MFDB's (videocams aside...)

For me the FW 800 is the best connector ever. eSATA also seems to work fine and very fast. The FW400 the worst ever. USB is steady but way to slow.

I never had a singel problem with FW800, and I have run many different Macs and differnt drives.
