Title: Print Exchange
Post by: CBarrett on November 29, 2009, 10:33:57 am
I know this is OT, but this is the only Sub-forum I post in, so here goes.

I'm coordinating an international Lu La Print Exchange.  Right here, right now.

Here's the deal:  People sign up to participate, let's limit it to, say, 20.  Everybody selects an image from their favorites (or makes a new one) and makes 20 prints.  You send them to me.  Send them in solid packaging that I can reuse for you.  Make sure I get your proper mailing address.  I make 20 packages of 20 different prints and send them out to you all.  There you have it, Print Exchange.  We used to do this at work every other year or so and it was always fun.

I'll pick up the postage on my end, cuz I'm cool like that.

How to sign up:  Reply below, say "I'm in"

Done.

Cool?

I vote for 8.5x11 just to keep it managable.

I like 11x17, but if the majority vote 8.5x11 that's cool, def more manageable.

I'll take a poll once the roster is filled out to see how long people need to get their prints together.  We could target just after the holidays if that makes it easier.

I'd suggest that whatever size is settled on be a maximum size.  That way we know other's prints will fit in the shipping container we send.

I would love to take part, but I guess timing is a bit iffy for me. How soon do you want to do it? I am also in Europe... I don't know if that gets too expensive.

I prefer 8x10/A4 for logistical reasons, but will go along with 11x17/A3 as well.

I'm in if its not constrained to just U.S. shipping.

No geographic limitations.  International was the idea.  I figured I give people maybe a month to get their prints together?  That can be flexible, tho.

Yes
we'll see how people prefer this
but I'm also for 11x17 or A3 size.
while I agree 8 1/2 x11 is convenient I think most prints will have a better impact slightly bigger.

Here's what I got so far:

Arash M
P Derganz

GB Photo
Craddosk
David K
John S
Feppe
Jozef Zajaz
E Ronald
B Proctor
P Sorantin

Maybe:

So Looks like we'll be closing admissions soon... I think much beyond 20 gets unmanageable.  As for print size, I don't have a problem with some people doing 8.5x11 and others doing 11x17.  I think whatever you feel best represents your image is fair.  I would ask that everyone send their stuff in 11x17 boxes though, to facilitate returns.  Once we have 20 solid participants  I'll start to go over the details and logisitics.

Cool.  Very cool.

20.

Cool.  Now then, is a 1 month timeframe manageable for everyone to get their prints done?

While I'm familiar with some of your commercial works, I'm really excited to see what people send in for this.  I'm sure we'll see a full spectrum of imagery!

Good thing I reread the original post.
I thought I was making 20 sets of 20 different images and was stressing over which images to print.
I'm pretty excited to see what I get!

11 x 17 works for me, as would 16 x 20.

Sounds great to me. Although my lab doesn't do 11x17 (metric system over here) Closest i can get is 305x425mm, 305mmx407mm and 305mmx450mm.

My apologies to everyone who missed signup.  While I don't feel like I can reasonably ask participants to make more than 20 prints for the exchange, I do think another one of these should be held soon.  I know I'd sign up again if I could.

Here's how I'd like to proceed...

Pick ONE of your images that you'd like to share.  Send me 20 prints of that image in an 11x17 box (or closest larger metric equivalent).  Feel free to print smaller if that's how you want your work seen or are limited to smaller outputs.  Enclose a note with your proper return address and any information you want to disclose about the image, technical, inspirational, whatever.  You'll be getting one of your own prints back, which saves me from having to make custom piles for everyone.

Send the prints anytime within the next month, but PM me when you do so that I know to look for them.

PS, I've considered creating an online portfolio of the 20 images, which may inspire more print exchanges.  It's up to you guys, let me know if you think that's cool or if you're not comfortable with it.

Same here. It would indeed be good marketing for the next round! I'm also curious to see just how different other people's prints look compared to their sRGB web-resolution photos.

I think the best solution is to PM the image to Mr Barrett, as otherwise he'll be spending quite a bit of time scanning the prints, and/or we'll waste a CD on just one image - but it's up to him of course.

It's safest to put "printed matter, no commercial value" on top of the package (in both directions) which minimizes the chance of customs getting overly interested in it.

how about anyone joining a second batch?

My Studio isn't properly manned till 15th of january, so try to get those packets in between 15th and 31st.

send me an email if you want to join: info@randlkofer.com, you get my shipping address from the link at the bottom.

great if you would insert a printed return adress label.

I was about to suggest that someone put together another one, there were a number of people interested beyond the first 20.  Cool!

I have prints from Marc, Phillip, Daniel J and Harri.  Loc, I'm around the next few days if you want to try and coordinate dropping them off.

Everybody else, it would be great if you could get your's in within the next week or so.  I've already booked about 20 days for next year so things are about to get nuts here!

Happy 2010!

PS... right now I have prints from California, Hawaii, Austria and Sweden.  How cool is that?!

Something like this (http://www.uline.com/BL_1301/Easy-Fold-Kraft-Mailers) is my favorite for shipping prints.  Ideally, you get a box 2 inches greater than your print dimensions.  I then stack the prints between flat sheets of corrugated cardboard that is also larger than the prints and just small enough to fit inside the box.  A few well placed pieces of masking tape around the edges of the two sheets of cardboard will keep the prints centrally located and safe from corner damage.

I've received prints rolled up in mailing tubes, in inkjet paper packaging (within a larger cardboard box) and also inside a strong fiberboard box.  Everything has arrived safely so far.

Question, do people want prints signed? I am not a fan of doing that, but if that's what others want, it's fine.

I have printed and signed mine in the usual way I print my images, but I sign with a pencil, so feel free to use an eraser.

Hi, Chris,

I saw the end of the month approaching quickly and having just got a new computer over the holidays I hurried to get it assembled and up and running.

With that all done, I ran the print job last night, but woke up to discover that I am out of two inks *sigh*.  I've placed a replacement order (ConeColor pigment inks), but it's going to be a few days until they arrive.

I'm very sorry to be "that guy" holding up the show.  I imagine it will take another week before mine will get to you.  I will definitely keep you posted.

My sincere apologies for any inconvenience to you and all of the other print swap participants.  (I hope the work I am sending will be worth the wait.)

Best regards,
-Brad

I am more torn with this 11x17 shape - need something more 4:3 for my work.   Looks like I gotta add some background.

By the way - what seems to be the paper of choice?

Don't feel constrained by 11x17.  I just wanted to set a maximum dimension so I can get everyone's prints in one size box.  If your shot is a square, print a square.

The prints are varied, some glossy, some matte, some with borders, others full bleed... however you like to print your work.

BTW, what's a NIC print?

Oh, and regarding maximum size--I never did see an answer to my question on that until the above post--my work is a square print on a 17" (square) sheet.   Too big?

Best regards,

Hey Edmund,

I've actually already got some prints in that are larger than 11x17 so don't worry about it.  I'll need to rebox everything anyway.  I'm knee deep in a bathroom remodel so I may not check in here everyday.   If in doubt on anything, just hold off until I get back to you.  I've still only got 11 or so prints, so there may be a few stragglers.

Greg, got your's this week.

Cool.

Chris I can send my A3+  (13x19") batch out via FedEx whenever you wish, if necessary I could cut them down a bit; also, I guess maybe we should all contribute financially to the boxing and shipping back?

BTW, I've signed my prints, and they show -no originality indeed- the Eiffel tower

And btw, - thank you for having the idea and doing the organizing work!

I'm not in a hurry at all, but there should be some deadline. I think we're way past the grace period, and anyone who has not already shipped theirs (or at least made the prints) should be moved to the next round (if there is one).

What do you think?

I think that Chris is doing ok so far, so let's let him deal with it. Making and shipping prints to Chris is a 3 day operation, so it's really a question of assessing the straggler's states of mind and motivating them.

Mine had its second noticed delivered. First on the 15th, and again on the 22nd. Chris should hopefully be able to pick it up on Monday and then I can see delivered on mine!

Just a quick question, is it just USPS, but the postal code 60402 shows a place just down the street from 3305 Wisconsin Avenue. Bit strange, but guess it could be a box or something.

That sounds like something weird with the UPS site.  I did have to go pick up one box of prints from FedEx, I think they were Brandt's, since I was out of town when they attempted delivery and in-person signature was required.  I haven't gotten any notices from UPS, and they usually leave stuff between the two front doors anyway.

I'll take inventory today when I get back to Chicago and post the results.  I'll review all the prints and, taking note of the largest size, order boxes for shipping on Monday.  I'm back on the road monday too but expect to be shipping prints out by next weekend.

Ok Shooters,

Craddosk (Thompson?)  I did get a notice from USPS and will pick yours up at the Post Office.  Looks like Ronny's just cleared Customs today.  With what I have on hand that accounts for 18.

I believe we're only missing Sean Kearns and P Sorantin, that is if GB Photo = Marc.  I can't keep all your nick names straight.  Suffice to say, I'm shipping these in a week whether it's 18 or 20.

I've got to get some 17x22 boxes (evil stare in Brad G's direction) but everything is coming together.

By the way, a more generic question for everybody participating in Chris' exchange:

Have you selected prints from the architecture domain for the submission to Chris' exchange?
Or just gone by what you think is quality work?

I was torn a bit between choosing some exterior work and some portrait work.
(Chris shooting architecture as a pro, made me lean towards that, although some of my portrait work is probably more compelling...)

Haha--since I'm not an architecture photographer, methinks you'd have been looking to get your money back if I'd submitted an architecture print!

Mercifully, I stuck to my domain and sent nature work I did in Iceland.

shipping boxes arrived yesterday, address labels printed, starting to box stuff up.

For the web gallery, right now I have your images titled with your names (so I could keep them straight).  Anyone have issues with your name appearing there?  I thought it would be nice to be able to identify the shots.

-CB

Thanks for everything Chris, feel free to use my name.

I've just shipped out the bulk of the parcels and most of you should have tracking numbers from me in your in box.  I still have to drop by Fed Ex with the two who included FedEx return slips (Thank you!).  I'll also be sending out the international ones tomorrow after I fill out a small pile of customs forms.  Thanks everyone for participating, I think we've got some really wonderful stuff here!

And if you can't wait to see the prints, you can see the web gallery here. (http://christopherbarrett.net/lula_print_x/)

Considering we had participation not just nationally but also from Sweden, Austria, Norway, Canada, France and The Netherlands... I think it was pretty successful.

2x Austria, as I am Austrian too, but live in New Jersey.

Didn't know we Austrians are such a force in photography; would have rather bet on skiing !

Viewing on line I just wish they were in hand very inspirational.

Just a note: If you click on "View" then drop down "about this gallery" no text.
Would be nice to have some text for those coming across the site. Using Safari BTW if that's at all relevant.

Ok, as of yesterday, everything is in the mail.  Internationals should take 6-10 days, Shapps and Lamson will get their's in a day or two (being closest to me), can't wait to hear what everyone thinks!

I guess I'm the first, and after a slight detour the prints arrived!  What a nice selection of styles and content!

I've no favorites just yet, must absorb them for a bit.

But nicely done everyone and thanks so much for sharing.

A little care package arrived in the mail today...

Many gorgeous prints!  Mind if I share some thoughts about my favorites? (no particular order):

Night Office (Philipp Derganz) - A beautiful low-key semi-abstract.  The repeating patterns are mesmerising!!  I love how the fluorescent lights on the rounded part of the building on the right seem to radiate out; contrasts nicely with the flat receding lines on the flat part of the building on the left.  The green stairwell lifts the dark tones for me, with all the class and intricate interior, I feel almost like a voyeur looking into this building at night trying to see what's going on.

Moonrise Over Observation Deck (Alan Brandt) - While the observation deck structure as a subject doesn't really work for me, the composition placement, depth of field, toning and other aesthetics combine beautifully in this piece.  The lighting/burning/dodging is very nice.

Svalbard Raindeer (Ronny Nilsen) - Ronny, what a lovely print!  The texture of the matte paper really makes the reindeer appear soft (not in appearance, but to the touch).  Combined with the salt-and-pepper blending of his coat, the overall high-key presentation of this scene really works for me.  My wife also commented that the beauty of nature comes through so easily in this piece!  I think she's right.

Festival of Cultures (John Schweikert) - I love this image.  The sillhouette is just light enough to hold a little detail.  Great job with the selective focus, too.  This rendering communicates a sense of the spirituality of his dance--I love this.  The tones range from full black to full white which is great, but there is somewhat of an unflattering (to my eye, at least) greenish-yellow tint to the print--I don't know if that was deliberate or not, but regardless, I really enjoy this piece--thank you!

Untitled (David Karmeli) - What appears to be a scene with a young girl lit from underneath with a bound, nude woman in the background.  What an arresting piece!  The on-screen JPEG does not do this image justice.  From the on-screen version, I thought the girl was a doll, but in the print, her skintones are so subtle; there is a translucent quality which quickly convinced me she is real.  As for what is going on in this scene, I am trying to piece it together, but cannot!  I'm enjoying the mystery.  I'm disturbed, intrigued, confused and impressed all at the same time.  I consider any piece which can do that a very successful piece of art.  What is in the girl's hand??

Untitled (Greg Shapps) - I am an avid cyclist, and somehow I never, ever thought to do anything like what you've done here.  I like how this print becomes abstract at a distance and very recognizable up close.  Perfect tonality throughout--this is gorgeous work!

Untitled (Arash Moallemi) - Did you know I just spent a fortune on medium format gear over the past two years, only to return to small format??  Your print is a stupendous example of what I was seeking when I made the transition--it leaps off the page with its crispness and exquisite detail.  Although I'm quite sure you didn't, please, please tell me you did this with small format gear!    Gorgeous rich colors--the blues, the red accent, the whites, the ultra-fine shadows, the symmetry, and those clouds!!  This print is just--well, sorry to overuse the word, but it's the only one that fits--exquisite.

I am relatively new to print exchanges, but I very much enjoyed participating.  Thanks to everyone who participated, and again to Chris for organizing and handling all the logistics.

Kind regards,
-Brad

You've peaked my curiosity Brad, unfortunately I can't see the prints until I return home at the end of next week, don't even have cell connection...

Thanks for the kind words Brad! This is one in a series that I'm currently working on related to the basement of this particular building. She has a rusty screw driver in her hand; I'll leave the rest to your imagination...

Great work everyone!  Such a wide variety of different styles.  I'm really happy with the prints I received.  My wife and I plan to frame most of them to hang on a big empty wall we have at home.  I'm excited.

Brad, great comments. I very much appreciated it.

I'm still waiting, it will take a while for the prints to come to the cold north. :-/ I'm really looking forward to getting them!
And thanks to Chris for organizing all this!

Brad - Thanks for the words!  I don't post my work much in forums and thought the print exchange would be a great way to force me to show something

I have been so freakin busy that I havent even unpacked the prints yet.   But from the gallery that Chris put together everything looks awesome.   Hoping to unpack it within the next couple of weeks after things slow down a bit - just around the time of the tax man cometh.

Got the prints over a week ago but got around to unpacking just now - wanted to do it in peace and daylight.

Love the variety of work, presentations, and papers.

With the threat of alienating 16 other artists, my top three (in no particular order):
All this gives a nice reality check on just how far I have to go to get to even close to the same level. Thank you everyone!

And most importantly, a huge thank you to Chris for going through the logistics, expense and time required to pull this off so successfully!
