Title: Compare Color vs. BW (Platinum)
Post by: spbimages on November 22, 2009, 07:44:04 pm
I am still working on getting the platinum look using digital processing. My question in this case is which image do you like better?

Thanks,
Steve

I'm generally partial to B&W, but in this case I find the color more interesting. The B&W seems a little flat, and I don't find the "platinum" effect convincing. This could be completely different in a print, of course.

I'm gonna say the color version is better. The alternating bands of color add character to the shot, which is absent from the B&W in my opinion.

Well?  I like them both, for differing reasons.  The colour version is great, but in my opinion the colours become the dominant focus of the image, and I lose track of what's lying under the colours so to speak.  With the B&W image the colours are gone of course, and I shift my focus to the rocks, the striations, etc.

I agree; I try B&W versions of nearly all my shots and use many of them, but this one just doesn't work for me. Stick with the colour!

IMHO the B&W version is better.  I only use color when it better reflects my vision or adds something to the image.  In this case, while there is nothing wrong with the color version, I don't feel anything is enhanced by color.

I prefer the color version. I think the platinum/paladium effect works best when photographing three dimensional subjects. This is essentially a 2D graphic design and the color adds a needed element. The monochrome version lacks visual interest in my opinion.

Yep... color.

In this case, the color actually simplifies and strengthens the image, for me anyway.  I find the b/w a bit too busy, lacking focus.

Nice work!

I like the b&w better because of the texture stands out more.
