Title: Epson 7880 question

I'm thinking on replacing my aging 7600.
I'm affraid the 7900 is out of my reach. Thinking on a 7880 for a lot less. I solved my PK/MK swith with the so called "south-african way".
Is there something like that for the 7880 model?

Imageprint with Phatte black. I have been using it for 4 years now on my 9800. I have added a 7880 just for Photoblack, but with papers like photorag Baryta bronzing is minimal and in fact most of the printing is still  done on the 9800 (bigger rollers are relatively more cheap). Also, why don't you buy a used 7800 instead of the 7880, there is really not much difference in final print quality.
If you have the funds though,the 7900 is the machine to get, and also Imageprint is not cheap.(but you might find a good "package deal" since many people are selling their Imageprint  license.

Thanks so much for your input Joschem.
I bought today a barely used 7880 for half the price. I've done so far b&w prints using ABW with EPPl and HFbAl. So far so very good.
My initial question still remains unanswered. Is there a similar way to the "South African way" to switch blacks like in the 7600?

Not sure what you mean by the "south african way".   I know on the 76/9600 you could force the printer to change blacks and then just print out a big sheet of paper with black ink until the new black replaced the old (I think I learned that trick from Alain Briot's website). Is that what you're referring to?  I'm not aware of anyway to do that with the 7880.  The 7880 does use less ink when swapping, although it still uses a fair amount.

Over on the Northlight Images site they have some instructions for swapping blacks on the Epson 7880/9880 which I assume is similar to the "south-african way". I have not tried it myself but it seems possible if a bit complicated.

If someone tries this or has tried it I would like to know how it goes. I only use matte black myself but may try the gloss if this method pans out.

I've seen it too at NL. I'd love to hear from someone that did it. I will certainly try it when I need it.
