Title: 10D is shipping - I touched one! :-)
Post by: ricwis on March 14, 2003, 10:28:57 pm
Mitch,
Picked mine up today at my favorite camera store.  My plan is to head out in the morning (if the weather cooperaties as it has been very windy and rainy) and take some photos.  I'll post them on my website along with the same shot using my D60 so anyone interested can compare them.

One thing I notice right away is the comfortable feel of the camera in my hand.  Seems to fit better.  I am one of those nut cases that actually reads the manual before I use the equipment so will be doing that this evening and getting acquainted with the controls.

As a side note, it was interesting to be in the camera store.  While I was getting my camera, the phone never stopped ringing.  They got 10D units in.  6 were claimed with deposits the rest were sold while I was there with people calling and buying on the spot.  They remarked that this was the best day of sales ever as they have never sold 15 digital SLR's in one day.

Looks like a great camera.

A few days ago I had some time with a 10D ...

To be fair I didnt really consider the grip very good...then again a friend of mine said it was marvellous , the other said it was horrible.

For me personally it is too fatty, to chunky...it does not "fit" the hand .......the whole camera is too thick.

Then again, I am used to an S2 which is a much thinner camera, and has a much more curved/carved grip.

Anyways..shot some photos with the 10D ...color is very good I must say, especially under artificial lighting.

Shutterlag felt slightly worse than my S2, but then again, so did the D60 so I cannot really call that a negative point.

ISO 200 had virtually no noise, about similar to the S2 as well in this respect.

All in all just a D60 revision , nothing spectacular, besides it's price and body obviously.

Today I attended the little photo show put on by The Camera Company at the Holiday Inn in Dedham, MA.  It was my first time at this show, which leans more towards video than still photography but still had some nice gear.

Not only did the Canon table have a 10D to play with, but they (the store running the event) had them in stock ($1500) at the show.  I witnessed one person buying three!  I have no idea how many they have; I'll be shocked if they don't sell out.  The show continues tomorrow for those in the area.

I played with the demo unit a bit, and it felt great.  My only complaint was they had it loaded with a 16MB card, which filled after three frames.  So I brought the quality down to low so I could test rapid shooting.

It's nice to see this camera shipping so quickly.  I spoke to the Canon rep, who said the new 17-40mm lens will ship in April and should have a street price around $800.  I'm sure I'll buy both but think I'll wait a short while to allow Canon to work out any bugs that may exist in early models (not that I know of any).

Yes, it seems Canon is coming up with good supplies of the 10D.  As expected the show I mentioned sold out, although more are expected in a week or two.  I spend some nice quality time with the demo 10D today.  I agree, it is more comfortable than I remember the D60 to be.  It also "seems" lighter, although I know by spec it's roughly the same.

While playing, I overheard another attendee talking to the Canon rep mention Luminous Landscape.  I jumped in, and by the end of the conversation we had the rep ready to jump at her next chance to check it out.

I look forward to your 10D feedback!
