Canon 1DSMK3 w/ 85mm F1.2L MKII F4.5 1/100th PP LR.2.3 - Natural Light

Found this gentleman at one of my favourite photography haunts the other day.

I like the first one... Captain Haddock in his dotage   Not so the second; it's like he is turning away from you as a sign of irritation.

Technically perfect, IMO.  You stopped down just enough to get all the weatherbeaten details in his face.

I also much prefer the first. I wondered how it would look in black and white and had the temerity to try:

I quite like the first one. The weathered texture of the face and the pea coat make me smell heavy seas.

Josh, The first is a very good portrait. I agree that the second, looking away, isn't at the same level as the first. The only critique I can offer is that including something from the subject's surroundings sometimes can raise a good portrait to the level of a great portrait. I don't know what this subject's milieu is, and looking at what you've captured of him, I'd like to know.
