Title: Viewing RAW files in Mac OS
Post by: Jim Pascoe on May 16, 2009, 05:40:37 am
Although I use Lightroom for editing and viewing the raw files from my Panasonic G1 camera with no problem, it is useful to be able to see the thumbnails when in Finder mode on the Mac.  The raw files from all of our Canon cameras show up fine, the files from the Panasonic just show up as plain icons.  Is this just down to Apple not having bothered to make their OS able to read the raw files from Panasonic, or is there something I can do.  We do have the latest updates as far as I am aware and are running OS 10.5.7.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Unfortuanety, Mac OS x 10.5.7 doesn't offer support for your Panasonic G1 camera ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475) ). You might want to fill Apple's feedback page here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html (http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html)

Unfortunately, waiting until Apple supports G1 RAW files all you can do. You'd better be patient

Thank you.  How is it that whenever I have a question you always seem to magically appear with the exact solution ( or in this case an explanation of why there is not an immediate solution)?  I always enjoy reading your replies to posts on this forum.  You seem to be a font of much knowledge and without an axe to grind, which is refreshing.  You are a great asset.

Keep up the good work!

Best wishes

Jim,
Thanks for the kind words.
Unfortunately, I have no workable solution for your problem. I could imagine a work-around involving exporting jpg files from Lightroom and then using AppleScript or Automator to change the icons of the RAW files but it's too complicated and I'm not sure that it would work. Using the form at the feedback page is what I would do. I'm naive enough to think that it might help…
