Title: England (Album)
Post by: MR.FEESH on April 12, 2009, 09:40:11 pm
So apparently there's some sort of limit to how many pics you can post in one comment...so please excuse the choppiness....

All taken with my only camera (    ) a point and shoot, Nikon L18:

I hope these numbers are correct in the order they appear:

#1 and #2 clouds - the clouds and horizon seem not well defined.

Stonehenge looks fine, even in that perspective, although there's *plenty* of room to crop with that sky.

#5 - organ - any info?  What kind?  Where?  Who built it?

#11 arches - good angle, color...

#22 - too dark.  Might work OK as dark if there were more definition.

#26(?) street scene with pedestrians - has possibilities, but what?  This needs something - a hook, or maybe a caption.

Hi There:

Some quick thoughts...

1. I like this image, and one can imagine that the cloud tops are mountains.
4. I'm assuming this is Bath?
5. I like the organ but I'd prefer to see more detail brought out of the shadows at the bottom if possible.
21. Good perspective, but if it was mine I'd brighten it a little bit.
25. I would have angled the camera down more, showing the patterns in the trunks rather than including so much of the branches.
27. This should have been shot vertically, in my opinion.
33. I'd crop off the window at the top; I don't think it adds anything to the image.
34. I'd see about rotating the image to straighten the columns, and remove the CA in the background.

Mike.

I like the shots on the whole, especially the gardens and/or tree shots.

Good work.

I agree with Mike on # 5. But the problem with this and with the others I'm criticizing regarding the lighting is that different monitors give different results. My monitor is carefully calibrated with Datacolor's Spyder Pro, but what you see and what I see may still be different.

7, 8, and 9 need to be brightened a bit in the buildings, and the local contrast needs to be increased. All three appear too flat. You can push up the white point to where a spot or two blows out, then use a curves adjustment layer to bring up the contrast in the lows. I've attached an example. It's done in haste, so it's not what I'd accept as a final version, but it shows what I mean.

21. I agree with Mike. Same problem.

23. Looks soft -- I'd suspect camera motion.

27. Again, I agree with Mike. This one also needs brightening and increased local contrast.

33. As Mike said.

Wow! Thanks guys- great comments.
I'm toying around with all of your suggestions, slowly at this point-- I have LR but am still learning things like layering, the curves tool, etc.
Unfortunately, I'm really busy trying to play catch up with all of the school work that has accumulated while I was away on this specific trip.  As I get better versions of these pics, I'll re-post them to see if I'm headed in the right direction.

Thanks again!

While I won't go into an image-by-image critique right now, I must say that your results are outstanding considering you were using a P&S.  It goes to show that you have the "photographer's eye"!  Nice job.
