Title: high outcrop

My first posting on the site, and a relative beginner ,I would appreciate criticism on ths shot taken on Dartmoor,in the SW of England.I wanted to emphasize the height of the Tor.

Welcome to the forum.

Ref. your photo - I'd like to have seen more of the Tor in context of its surroundings, or something that emphasised the shape of the rocks. Alternatively, an abstract close-up on the rock, with lighting that revealed the rock texture.

Hi Arwyn, from another Devon resident.

The lighting has captured the modelling of the granite well, but I don't feel this works well as a whole.

I agree with Bill: this 'falls between two stools' in compositional terms, being neither a grand landscape nor a semi-abstract detail, but half and half. The composition is rather static: the big immovable lump of rock seemingly hindering our view of the farmland beyond.

If you want to emphasise the tor, then a good way is to get down low and find an angle where it's towering over you. "A good photographer has dirty knees" as they say!

On bright days like this, you will need to experiment with exposure to find a setting that doesn't overexpose the sky (or do exposure blending from several tripod shots, for example).

Thanks for your comments Lois. The reason I put this one up for criticism is because I knew there was something fundermentally wrong but could'nt quite grasp it.I knew that I'd blown the sky out ,but the rest seemed out of balance.Still, lessons learned from your comments.

PS Exmouth is my patch.
